Subject: Bearer of Bad News

I was just up late, doing some work when I heard the news:

Cancelled. Confirmed on timminear.com

I am not sure exactly what to think. On the one hand, RationalMe isn't suprised at all. Television is not what it used to be - even as recently as 1997. There isn't a doubt in my mind that "Buffy" would never have been picked up if it aired today. Too different, terrible ratings. Also, the very premise of "Firefly" was always going to be a tough sell, especially in the Time Slot of Doom. Combine all those factors with Fox's decision to not show the original pilot and you have all the makings of a cancelled show.

On the other hand, IrrationalMe says, "What the fuck? I am not a conspiricy theorist, but you will have a hard time convincing me that there wasn't a plot to doom this show from the beginning. It's as if Fox pulled out their copy of 'How to Completely Fuck Up a New Show' and then followed it to the letter." Hmm, why don't we go back to RationalMe.

It's still possible that, if the actors and M.E. want to test the waters, another network could decide to pick it up (Yeah, I'm talking to you, UPN. What in God's name do you have to lose, except even more viewers if there isn't a "Buffy" next year?). Anyway, my faith in public creativity (vis-a-vis tv & film) just took another blow.

I would like to close with something that sums up my feelings about Fox. Apparently, Joss & Tim were given the news today (Wednesday), and they in turn went downstairs to give the cast the bad news. *While they were in the middle of filming an episode. With one more day of shooting to go*. Are you telling me that they could not have waited one and a half days? I bet the cast and crew will be EXTRA motivated tomorrow, don't ya think? That is such a dick move. I wonder how Joss feels about signing that big bucks deal with Fox now.

Assholes.

Sorry, IrrationalMe slipped out little there at the end. Won't happen again. Maybe.
