They probably modified the atmo some, but no one asked what Reavers were in "Bushwacked." It still seems that Mal is the only one who has a primary account. But everyone else at least knows they aren't just a bed time story, which seems the "civilized" assumption. Just cause Wash, Zoe, and Jayne know to be good and scared doesn't mean they ever met them.
