I thought that Geisha were just entertainers and that the idea that they are prostitutes is a western misconception.

I recently saw a rather long documentary on them (TLC or Discovery, something like that) and they are exhaustively trained in conversation, flirting, dancing, traditional Japanese social conventions (they practice greeting people over and over everyday), and all these games to amuse their guests/customers (throwing fans accurately, drinking games, etc). They also have a very demanding costume that is designed to hide their femininity except for the nape of their neck. This documentary said that they don't have sex with their clients and that both the Geisha and their customers know that their interaction is an elaborate fantasy. Western visitors though are often confused and don't understand that it is _just_ a fantasy and nothing more.

I was wondering though if the no sex thing was recent or a long standing tradition. Anyone know?
