I'm not educated in Chinese culture but certainly in oriental medicine. The point I'd like to make about yin and yang is that they are 2 parts of one essence. They are two ways of expression of energy. But they are one. In the yin yang symbol, we see that there is no pure yin or yang. Each yin contains yang, each yang contains yin. The ideal state for these expressions is balance - which is what acupuncturists and shiatsu practitioners attempt to do it their treatments. In terms of behaviour, I think that it's important to note that one can use either yin or yang expression to achieve an end but that in receptive (not passive!) behaviour there is always an element of aggression and even in aggressive behaviour there is always and element of receptivity. If the inhabitants of Firefly were more savvy about Chinese culture, perhaps they would have been more suspicious of Saffron and her seemingly receptive behaviour. The Chinese say whatever has a front has back. Just because you can't see the back, doesn't mean it's not there.
