Yalta
-a soviet city where the peace confrence took plact @
-Rooselvelt,Churchill& Stalin were involved
-Stalin renewed promise to enter Pacific War
-Roosevelt said that Soviet Union should get some of the territory in the Pacific that they lost in 1904 Russo-Japanes War
*United Nations
-Big 3 agreed on an international oganization
-new United Nation would have a General Assembly/every member would be represented
-Security Council w/ permanent reps. of the 5 major powers(Britian,France,U.S.,China& Soviet Union)
-each power have veto power\
-security council would have temporary delegates from other nations
-Yalta Conference produced real accord
*Disagreement Over Germany
-Roosevelt wannted to reunite & reconstruct Germany
-Stalin wanted to impose heavy reparations to ensure a permanent dismemberment of the nation
-U.S.,Britian,France&Soviet Union would each control its own"zone of occupation"
-zones be determined by position of troops @ the end of the war
-Berlin into 4 sections
-Roosevelt,Churchill& Stalin returned home convinced he haad signed an important agreement
-Roosevelt watched soviet union moving systematicly to est. pro-communist giv. in1 Central or Eastern Euro. Nation after another
-Stalin wouldn't make changes in Poland
-Roosevelt still had hope, but April 12,1945 suffered a massive stroke & died

The Containment Doctrine
-by the end of 1945 the Grand Allience was in shambles
-new American policy was to contian the threat of soviet expansion
*Truman Doctrine
-in turkey Stalin was trying to win control over vital sea lanes to mediterranean
-then in greece they threated thier pro-westerned gov
-truman doctrine:"I believe that it must be the policy of the u.s. to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures"
-truman wanted 400million to bolster armed forces of Greece
& Turkey& part went to economic assistance to Greece
-American commitment helped ease Soviet pressure on Turkey & helped Greek gov. defeat the communist
-it est. a basis for American foreign policy that would survive for 30yrs.

The Road to NATO
-Truman reached a agreement w/ England & France to mrege 3 western zones of occupation into New West Germany Republic
-Stalin wanted Truman to give up his section of Berlin
-Stalin put a blockade on Berlin
-division of Germany into 2 antions: Federal Republic in West & Democratic Republic in East became offical
*NATO
-April 14 1949 12 nations signed on agreement est. North Alantic Treaty Organization
-declaring that on armed attack against 1 member would be consider a attack on all
-NATO countries would keep a military force in Europe b/c of Soviet threat of invasion

HUAC & Alger Hiss
-House UN-American Activities Committee investigation to prove that under Democratic rule the gov. had tolerated communist subversion
-commitee turned to movie industry
-saying that communist infiltrated Hollywood
-Writers producers were called to testify
-whenn they refused to answer questions they refused to answer questions they were put in jail
-others were barred from employment in industry
-hollywood adopted a black list
*Alger Hiss
-was investigated by HUAC
-high ranking member of State Department
-Whittaker Chambers a communist agent & editor of TIME magazine
-he said that Hiss passed classified State Department documents through him
-Hiss sued for slander
-Hiss:convicted of perjury & served several yrs. in prison


-Hiss said that Hiss
