1. [The newcomers address the first people]

We, the people of Australia, acknowledge your prior relationships, rights and responsibilities with this land we share. Many of us were born here and have never known any other home. Many of us have come here to be free from injustice in other lands. We have no desire to be part of injustices here and we are sorry for the suffering that we have caused or allowed to occur. We ask that you accept us in your land and share it with us for the good of all its inhabitants and of the land itself.

2. [The first people reply to the newcomers]

We, the people of Australia, acknowledge that you have developed relationships with this land we share and that you would suffer if you had to leave it. We recognise that much of the pain that has been caused between us was due more to misunderstanding than to malice and that the desire for understanding is stronger than ever before. We welcome you to these lands and to the responsibilities and rights of those that live here, for the good of the land itself and of all its people.

3. [The people speak together]

We, the people of Australia, are one of the oldest cultures on earth and one of the youngest: let us bring together all that is best of what we are. We acknowledge our often divided past and pledge a common future, where an injustice to any one of us is an affront to us all.
