The monarchy was abolished by a military coup in 1889, an event which is celebrated each year on November 15, even by people vigorously opposed to other military coups, such as the one in 1964. When the most recent dictatorship ended in the 1980s, there was a referendum do determine whether Brazilians wanted an executive president, a prime minister or a king.
