] Date Posted: 10:55:30 11/25/04 Thu Has anyone in the UK been watching the BBC series “Empire Warriors”? This is a series on military conflicts during the closing years of empire. Last week’s episode was about the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in Aden. It was very interesting, especially in today’s context with the war in Iraq. Watching the tactics employed in 1967 against Arab insurgents in what is now Yemen, brought a certain sense of Déjà Vu, with the TV coverage of the day looking exactly like Iraq today, albeit in Black and White. The only difference however, was that the war correspondents were looking for national heroes, rather than war criminals. The Americans could learn a thing or two from Col. “Mad” Mitch, if he were alive today. [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |

Date Posted: 14:53:11 11/25/04 Thu I saw that episode too. Aden is one of those rare bits of British history that has been forgotten by pretty much everyone. An embarrassment for pretty much anyone who cares to analyse it, of whatever political persuasion, it's just been brushed under the carpet, and consequently it appears that the lessons that could have been learned from it have not been. Date Posted: 15:11:49 11/25/04 Thu Is this the incident in which the SAS took over Aden without anyone actually noticing, and then left? If so, I think that a book was recently published about it, which might be interesting. The SAS, of course, is never likely to be so effective a force again, since it will be hardest hit by the exodus of all Commonwealth citizens from its ranks under the new laws, having an inordinately large Dominions contigent. Oh well... [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
