Subject: The Tory Party has finally gone completely bonkers.

Poor, poor Boris. Topical quiz show host, magazine editor, cyclist and the Tories' bumbler-in-chief, has been sacked by Michael "No Garlic Please" Howard because of some affair with his secretary. Can the Conservatives really afford to take a high moral line on adultery, given their recent history, without looking slightly ridiculous? And their decision to remove the only member of the Shadow Cabinet whom nobody hates... except for Liverpudleans.

And that brings us to another point: given Howard's deliberate and unnecessary humiliation of Boris over the Liverpool article (which he didn't write), does it not seem as if Howard has been looking for an opportunity to get rid of the Johnson Menace for some time? If so, we must ask why. My two pet theories are, firstly, that the party has a history of sacking Eurosceptics (Redwood, Portillo, Gorman, Gill, Cash, etc. etc.); and, secondly, that Mr Howard is aware that any Tory whom the public does not hate is a threat to his truly feeble leadership.

Any thoughts, chaps?

It's certainly a bit over the top, when you consider what a member of the Government has to do to be sacked, if only temporarily.

I suspect Howard regards him as a bit of a liability after the Bigley affair, and he is maybe not in tune with the "New improved touchy-feely Tories TM"

They just wanted to get rid of him. My suspicions are that his trip to Liverpool were motivated by blackmail from Central Office. With so much evidence on his side, including the endorsement of the article by the Mayor of Liverpool and half of the city's local press, why else would he not just tell Howard to get stuffed? I reckon that Howard said, "Now, Johnson, off you toddle up north to apologise to these blighters, hehe, and if you look ridiculous then you shouldn't have let that article get into your magazine [cackle cackle, rub hands]." And so off he toddled, and the allegations came out anyway, probably as a result of assiduous leaking from people within Central Office.

There is none so malicious and backstabbing as a Tory - I know, since I have been involved in the party since I was five, being taken canvassing in the 1987 election and in every election since, from European up to local up to national level. They say that two Tories is an argument, and three is a conspiracy. There's a lot in that.

Still, Deus dabit his quoque finem...

Endless Tory intrigue has always been one of the most irritating things about the party as far as I’m concerned. They even conspired to remove a leader who won three consecutive elections!

With the aforementioned ceremony having taken place on Thursday, I would like to add a (too) late wildcard entry. The ceremony took place at Edinburgh's prestigious Prestonfield House Hotel, and surprisingly, someone actually did win the award. It was not a rollover.

However, if the award had been postponed for a few hours, a different winner would have emerged. Scottish Labour’s answer to Boris’s misdemeanour was provided by Lord Watson (also an MSP). He has today been charged with wilful fire-raising after trying to burn down the hotel in the early hours of Friday morning, after the bar staff refused to serve the inebriated Peer of the Realm any more drink.

Not surprisingly, he has no recollection of the event, despite being captured by CCTV cameras.
