In reply to: Dave (UK) 's message, "NZ Flag Debate" on 22:49:24 01/24/05 Mon

I rather like the NZ flag. In fact, I think that the red stars with the white outline actually looks more splendid than the Aussie plain white stars.

However, I think that, as well as the hostility chez Lefties for the Jack in the canton, there is another aspect which you haven't touched upon. Quite simply, from a distance, the NZ and Australian flags look kind of similar. There is a desire to distance NZ from its larger neighbour as well as that rather antiquated old beast, Great Britain, with all its negative, racist, non-green baggage. I always suggest to New Zealanders that they should just change the colour of the ensign to a nice hippie green and keep the Jack and the stars... maybe replace the stars with some Maori whirly thing like they have on their coins if they're feeling particularly keen on the effnic thing.

In fact, here's an idea: I presume that the NZ flag-changers have a similar website to the Aussie republicans (www.ausflag.com?) where they exchange new flag ideas to get rid of that hide-bound old British one. Why don't we come up with a new, NZ-specific flag, and post it on their website as a contribution to the debate (as it might be a green ensign with stars or an effnic whirly thing), and attribute it to the FCS? There could be a preamble - you know, our belief in maintaining distinct identities within the Crown Commonwealth without prejudicing loyalty to QEII etc. etc. It might finally get us a Kiwi member or two.

I remember seeing a black flag with a silver fern being mooted not so long ago. However, I thought it looked more like a banner you would bring to an All-Blacks game, rather than a national flag. Australia will be adopting the inflatable kangaroo next.

Anyone who thinks Australia and New Zealand's flags are too similar should try these tests:
