For me, the greatest enemies of Commonwealth federation are the narrow-minded nationalists of our respective countries and the political classes that would not want to have their power diluted by being part of something bigger.

If we had the will to federate, external influences could not stop us from doing so, although the external interference would be strong.

I fully agree that petty, location-based nationalism is our greatest enemy.

However:

Suppose that I were Canadian, say.

I might favour the idea of an F.C. because it could reduce "Liberal" influence. Equally the Liberals might fear an F.C. for the same reason.
