He walked the steps toward her apartment by instinct. They had been memorized the first time he had come. They would be forgotten today. His rough face was dead. Dead and scarred. Scarred and broken behind his mask. His silver eyes stood out, bleak expanses in his tanned face. They were like a snow covered plain, surrounded by nothing. Cold, ice, diamonds of silver. Betraying nothing, proving nothing, challenging nothing. Dead as he felt, they were. He stuffed his scarred hands in the pockets of his jeans - he felt bare without his coat. It was the only reason he had come. He must've left it in her bedroom, it was hte only place he'd taken it off. His lank hair hung unkempt about his features, as he rose the last few steps to her hall. And her door. The curtains were closed, but they blew in against the breeze from the open window. He didn't look past them to the inside. He put his fist up to knock against her door and paused, centimeters from its surface, as if there were a barrier - one he wasn't allowed to cross. His chin fell toward his chest, and his eyes squeezed shut. He took a deep breath, he could do this. Slowly, he raised his chin and set it parallel to the ground, his mouth set in a firm line. Gently, he rapped against the door.
