We took a little holiday trek to the oregon coast . We took three different routes coming and going all of it driven in the storm damage area.
The majority of the large trees down were not from falling over they down from being split lenghtwise the roots and portions of the trees were still standing they were twisted off from toward the top to toward the bottom. The trees we saw down were mostly on the right of way . Houses in many cases are built close to the right of way. Homeowners have no say about trees on the right of way .
This kind of blows your theory of home owners being responsible for blown down trees. Also the power and phone lines are on the right of way in most cases > We saw lines that were down as late as last Fri. So people in Or. were still without power at that time . THere were wash outs on roads they were down to one lane traffic with long waits at both ends .
The storm were so many trees were tipped out of the ground was the ice storm several years ago . I suppose the extra weight of the ice on the evergreens was to much for them in a wind .
