incandescent bulbs are an effecient method of creating heat and light.

Heating pad would work even better. I have one that draws less wattage then a bulb, and it has a thermostat. Dog could lay right on it, creating a much more effecient heat transfer. BTW, all animals are supposed to sleep in the dark. Otherwise, melatonin and other deficiencies can lead to serious health problems, including cancer.
