It’s Christmas Eve and all around
Parents creep and gifts abound
The children sleep all unaware
Come the morn these gifts they’ll share

Sitting in a darkened street
A tear stained face with cold, cold feet
This lonely child sits so forlorn
No joy in prospect for the morn

A prosperous gent the worse for drink
Trips and falls, the snow stains pink
The child alone she sees him fall
And runs to make emergency call

The help arrives and aid is given
Now prosperous gent is up and driven
Through blurry eyes he’s seen the child
As he lay bleeding he’d seen her smile

He knew ‘twas she who’d saved his life
He turned and walked towards the light
As night moved on the gent returned
To find the girl his heart it yearned

He found her lying in corner damp
Her tear stained face showed in the lamp
Unconscious now and close to death
He picked her up and checked her breath

Her heartbeat slow her breathing shallow
Laid in his arms like dying sparrow
He took her home, put her to bed
The Doctor called, Prescription read

The whole night through he sat with her
As dawn it broke, the girl did stir
Her big blue eyes did sparkle bright
For she was radiant in the light

The gent’s dear wife came to their sides
Started to cry as she opened her eyes
The child in bed was their daughter’s image
They’d lost her when she was just that age

This child he’d picked up off the street
With threadbare clothes no shoes on feet
Could they this child cast back outside
When all around was Yuletide pride?

They downstairs went this Christmas morn
And gifts all round the room were strewn
All labelled for this mystery girl
These gifts were from a different world

This is a lovely story and, to my mind, evokes a Dickensian Christmas. It is very different from the last poem I read, but I really like this. I am now going to "hunt" for more ... well, the fire is lit and the wind is blowing - driving the rain onto the window pane, so it's the perfect night for poetry reading ... keep up the good work sweetheart!! Thanks Jemmones. Your comments are noted with delight, I like the sound of a Dickensian Christmas. Again thanks for words of encouragement. (kk)
