even though Fox has proven to be abysmally stupid in the past concerning taking risks with certain quality genre productions. However...

The X-Files *did* originate on Fox's Friday night lineup, and it did go on to become one of the powering engines behind their becoming a major network, as well as establishing their stake on the hipster/geek/cool front. If there are any undead braincells on the boards at Fox (I'm reaching here, I realize, but we can hope), they must realize that any new series with as much backstory and intelligence as Firefly takes a while to find its audience, especially in such a traditionally unfavorable timeslot. Friday nights, the ideal demographic's eyeballs are often out on the town. Don't know what they could have been thinking, but if they seriously thought Firefly would have been a loser out of the gate, they wouldn't have shelled out so much money on it from the beginning. They've given Joss unprecedented control, but there's that trust issue ... by screwing with the show's continuity and chopping up the unaired pilot, they show a terrible disregard for creative vision. I don't expect any more from the major networks since they only think about numbers anymore. What's an artist to do?

I too will weep if yet another episode sci-fi show dies a-borning, but I think it's still a little to early to starting ringing Firefly's death knell. Joss can pitch like nobody else in the biz, and what else has Fox got to woo the sci-fi genre crowd now that X-Files is history? Those former Sunday night sci-fi fans have been forced to defect to either rival WB's Angel or ABC's Alias. All I can say is, John Doe ain't cutting it for me. In no uncertain terms, if Firefly gets axed, these eyeballs will be taking a walk to another network without a backward glance.
