I've never been much of a Trek fan, but I love Firefly. It's not that Trek isn't a fine show (I happen to think it's very top-notch), it's just that it never hooked me like other sci-fi shows/movies have. Something about it always kept me at arm's length.

I think what I like about Firefly (and other shows w/ a similar look and feel) is grit. For me, grit tends to mean authenticity. If a show has some dirt around the edges, it rings a little truer for me and comes off as more believable. Anything that appears too slick or clean tends top put me off a bit.
