i believe that when making a song most songs are based around the same 4 chords because they work well. and if it isnt those 4 chords, all they've done is taken them and moved them up a couple intervals. i don't know if anybody will understand when i say them but it's the relative minor, dominant, subdominant and tonic chords, and it's worked for centuries including classical music (i'm classically trained)

the thing about punk is that they take the 4 chords that work well together, and because they can't get they're fingers around the normal chords, put them into power chords, sing about how sad they're life is and how they wish that they would die, most of the time which is a load of shit, and every average dickhead believes he relates to it. the only thing needed to for a punk song is to have a catchy strumming pattern cuz there is no need for finger picking.

i believe that a proper good song, should have catchy elements other than just plain chords, which is why bands such as RHCP and living end (which is one punk band that bothers to do something interesting) really interest the public and can proudly call themselves tallented.

Chris is that you? ....intervals? tonic chords? relative minor? lol im impressed!

you have some good points there, and i guess that's why so many new kids are playing punk now...they want the easy way out and it's a lot easier to play 4 chords than to play killer riffs and solos (metal, classic rock)
