And when i say this i do not mean Simple Plan etc etc. Try doing some songs by less commercial punk bands such as Fall Out Boy...you can listen to them on www.purevolume.com. It's easier to get sponsered if you play punk plus the crowd gets more involved. Just an idea. perhaps im just a dick. Give your response everyone. [> Subject: Re: Change of style Author: Justin [ Edit | View ] Date Posted: 20:56:15 06/25/05 Sat hi mr X or wateva.... we've thought about it...and were starting to slowly consider it. maybe not the punk cattegory...but more popular music in general...it doesnt just mean we should do punk...but were thinking along those lines...more covers i would say...we like our current style of writing...theyre not 8 minute long anthems with complex guitar melodies...but theyre not songs that use 3 or 4 chords and have guitar solos consisting of 5 notes. i guess its hard thinking of a band we are similar to...the ones i can think of are metallica in the load/reload era, there definately is a bit of nirvana in us, id say our songs are as complex as something by the foo fighters. we havent discussed in great detail but we have covered it... bands that i want to cover that we know the crowd can and we can also enjoy are bands such as blink 182, puddle of mudd, system of a down, foo fighters and chili peppers i agree with u partly...but it doesnt just have to be punk, i know its easier with punk...but its not just about whats easy....2 make good music u hafta enjoy what you do... punk isnt the only popular stuff...heavy metal is popular...so is progressive and alternative rock...but we are working at it...people have heard us play metallica etc...they may/may not like it...but anyone who has heard our 3 1st originals will definately agree they are not metallica replicas...once you hear these then i guess u can hear our true style...but keep your responses coming...tell us what you would like us to play aswell... If you got the most talented drummer, singer, bass, and guitarist in the world and put them into one band i can assure you they wouldnt sell more albums than Blink 182(other none talented bands)has. A band is judged on how well they write songs and gel together.... RHCP are a perfect example of this.... i dont think i've met 1 person who HATES RHCP. Some of the most talented musicians play in unknown jazz bands, this does not make them successful but there is no doubting their talent. Personally if given the choice i would choose talent over money/success any day. Also i do believe that Rob A hit the nail on the head when he said that gelling is a big part of being a band. It is true that most punk consists of power chords, i would be a fool to argue against that. BUT, i think chris has got the whole basis of punk music wrong. Lyrics are a huge factor when it comes to true punk music. TRUE punk music is mostly about relationships no doubt but they dont present it in a way that makes the listener want to kill himself etc etc...thats emo music (a knew trend that all the sheep have followed after going through pop punk). And fans of punk music are not people that want to kill themself, that is once again a group of idiots that we refer to as emo's. Yeah Rob i do agree with you in that most kids learning the guitar do turn to punk because its easy to play, but then again so is MOST mainstream music, including Nirvana. The onli thing i can add is that you should step outside ur normal comfort zone in terms of what music u listen to and what sources u get ur music from. Triple j play a whole mix or stuf, from good punk like Gyroscope to normal rock like Grand Fatal & After the fall to metal like A perfect cirlce, I Killed The Prom Queen, even some mainstream Slipknot..but they're perfect for what ur style seems to include. Im a big believer in if you dont like a certain type of music, dont bag it out just dont listen to it..and dont follow the crowd like a bunch of sheep..experiment and find a style or styles that suit you and stick with that.. I actually do llisten to triple j and love what they play (most of the time). I think i am relatively open to new styles of music, but i can understand that i dont come across that way. You mentioned Gyroscope (sick band), they are hving a tour coming up so you might be interested in that, their plaing at Penrith. You also mentioned After the Fall, their awesome as well. I totally agree with your views on live music. Bands always sounds so much better live than on a cd, i think the atmosphere of those sort of concerts have a big effect on it as well.
