Subject: we should start an online petition
Keep Dick Davey! Keep Dick Davey!
In all seriousness, DD deserves another year to turn this around.
on another note, i remember a few months back this message board was pretty much dead. glad to see that this board is now alive with knowledgeable posters who actually have interest in SCU ball.

Re: we should start an online petition -- Bronco66, 19:01:10 02/18/04 Wed
Hey Dent ... WELCOME BACK !!! (tell a friend)
thanks for the positive feedback (as they say)
I seem to remember that DD got a 5 year extension
per: http://www.ncaa.org/news/2001/20010730/record.html
Men's basketball -- Dick Davey, head coach at Santa Clara, was awarded a contract extension through the 2004-05 season.
so he has one more on Cheryl's 25 in 5 plan ... (her goal to make SCU a top 25 athletic school in 5 years) ...
the good news is Dick has one more season ... and it should be better than this one ... (actually this had a chance of a 20 win season ... so if we get consistancy ... a consistantly good PG and a solid POST player ... Dick should be pretty safe ... ) if ...
DD is obviously well respected ... and a director of the NABC (at CL's behest???) and a voting coach on the The USA TODAY/ESPN Board of Coaches top 25 Coaches' Poll
so ... what happens is still up in the air ... the Baseball change was needed ... but perhaps done a little? harsher than it needed to ...
the W's Basketball coaching issue was probably largly due to some "mis-calculation" which left CL scrambling ...
the WP / Tennis / Golf? / Crew / ??? / changes were a sincere attempt to upgrade ...
all of which may mean that DD's situation is not quite the same ... what he needs is some recruiting help --- in all ways ....
Gonzaga's success in a large way reflects GU's ability to recruit excellent LOCAL Spokane talent ... the other Wash schools BB programs imploding (or never there) and
being able to continue that after initial success ... which
now means being able to make wider recruiting possible (Rony and "P-Mac")
so while a fine program ... not exactly reproducable at SCU
the program Cheryl aspires to be as successful as (or better) is Pepperdine ....
Pepperdine seems to regularly enroll basketball "academic project" players ... those who's academic profile don't exactly match the median for the campus (and don't always graduate) ... actually I think from a Social Justice standpoint SCU might consider enrolling a few "challenged" students campus-wide and the appropriate percentage could be student-athletes ... but with about 10% of the student body being D-1 sport student athletes that means about 40 additional "disadvantaged" scholarships/financial aid and support infrastructure to make an impact ... anyone have an idea how Pepperdine does it???
well that is more than I intended to write ....

Stay DD stay and a Henke- Angley update -- JCard, 19:37:49 02/18/04 Wed
'66-
Good analysis as always. I hope you're right that the additional contract year is enough of a buffer to keep DD around for another season. My concern is this: after last season's debabacle, Levick gave DD a (shudder)vote of confidence, and made reference to the inordinate number of injuries the team had suffered over the previous two seasons. That she gave the public endorsement is telling; if DD's departure wasn't a possibility, I don't know why she would have bothered.
Still, as you note, good players make all the difference and some help at the 1 (Hopefully Angley, who while scoring only 9, had 14 assists and 7 steals last night), 3 (maybe Henke, who posted 25 last night in a victory over the #4 team in MN large school division)and 5 ( SCUBRONCOS JUCO Post)can be differernce makers next year. But hell, we ain't necessarily finished this season, right?

All they've got to do is .... -- Bronco66, 00:09:45 02/19/04 Thu
Win the LAST game at Leavey ....
that means at least a 17 win season ....
and a trip to the dance ....
it's little BIG Game II .... time to start winning again ...
