Subject: Other thoughts

After reading this board all year but never contributing, I figure it's time to make a few posts. First of all, I want to say I respect all of you who post on this board. You seem very knowledgeable and introduce stimulating conversations. With that said, here are some random thoughts:

I hope the old Kyle Bailey comes back in full effect by the time the WCC Tournament hits the Leavey Center.

I do not understand the constant love Sean Dennison receives on this board. He is a nice guy, but I absolutely cannot stand watching him play. He constantly looks lost, he is not aggressive on offensive or defensive boards, he gets muscled up by nearly everyone he tries to guard, he has terrible hands, and he lacks any go-to post moves. I hope he improves in the coming years, but I really do not see this happening. Hopefully I am dead wrong.

I wonder how many teams in the nation have an assistant coach who would clearly be the best player on the team, as Lloyd Pierce is to the Broncos. After playing extensively with both the team and Lloyd, I can tell you that this fact is not even arguable.

Jim Howell has always been underappreciated and will be missed during the rest of the season. Hopefully Scott Borchardt and Jordan Legge will see increased playing time and be willing to step up.

Doron is an exceptional athlete and very exciting to watch. If he continues to work hard, he might be able to overtake Lloyd as the best player in the program.

I love Niesen's hustle and tenacity, but I wish he would develop a right hand. By now, every team in the WCC knows he's going left, and it is hurting his game.

Dick Davey is one of the classiest coaches in America, and it will be a shame if he is fired after this year. However, knowing how Levick has run things thus far, it seems like a changing of the guard is imminent.

Any questions, comments, or disagreements are welcome.

Thanks for posting from one who reads more than posts too.

Some random thoughts:

* Howell - I feel bad for the guy. Huge improvement from year 1-3, but a major drop off this year in my opinion.

* Bailey - looks very poor the last 4 games I've seen him play. He'd be riding pine if Altheimer had not transferred. Bailey is slow, short and can't shoot. That's a bad combination for a basketball player. He's a major liability on the court, whereas, based on his frosh/soph performances you'd expect him to be our star. He must not be 100% physically though I'm just guessing.

* Nieson may need to work on going right, but he's our most improved player and best inside player. Both by a mile.

* Denison - I don't see what the big deal is either. I thought I saw a nice play the other night but it turned out to be Tibbets. Not sure why Tibbets and Borchardt don't play more ... aren't they are 2 biggest players on a team with lack of size? Also Kargbo looked good the other night. I don't trust Davey to use the proper players anymore. The Andersons, especially Cord, turned out to be very legitimate and useful players but only saw action their senior year when everyone else was hurt.

* Perkins needs to get more ball and more shots.

* Rohe - I can't explain the drop off either. He looked so good last year.

* Team - in the past, Davey teams have been greater than the sum of their parts, but the last few years and especially this year its been the opposite. I'm also very disappointed at the lack of player improvement/development under Davey the last 5 years or so. Few players seem to improve significantly: Wushnig and Emslie are great examples. We seem to be seeing this again with Legge and Rohe. Also, we have good kids who hustle but there is a certain lack of intensity out there. I'm not sure what Levick will do (she sure seems to have pissed everyone off though I'm not sure exactly why), but one can't blame her if she decides to bring in a new coach next year. Our recruiting is average, execution poor, attendance dismal and momentum negative.

Who knows, we may turn this around and win the tourney at home but that's a real longshot. Eyeballing the standings and remaining games we are likely to come in 7th place and thus have round 1 be a road game anyway. At least I think that's how it works.

[> Re: Other thoughts -- the mini-series -- Bronco66, 09:37:44 02/17/04 Tue

Again SCUBroncs thanks for contributing

I too hope the old Kyle Bailey comes back ... seems that he did for USD and then disappeared again.

I would agree that Dennison is the "deer caught in the headlights" ... have watched and maybe seen a small improvement over the year (like watching new grass grow ... you know it's happening but you can't wait) ... the coaches are (were??) very high on him (on his potential) so perhaps that is where the hope lies .... I would agree he does not appear aggressive on the boards, etc. -- let's hope he bulks up a bit and does the other things ... DD seemed to have success bring along big men in the past (Ron Reis, Nick Vanos, ???) ... yes they were projects ... and yes David Emsley never became the promise (although I saw a move or two his senior -- RS -- year) ... let's hope Sean is on a faster track ...

and YES YES YES we would have a much better team if Lloyd Pierce still had elgibility ... and great to have someone on this Board who has played "extensively with both the team and Lloyd" ... thanks for adding your insight...it is truly appreciated ...

see elsewhere for Jim Howell comments ... but I will repeat that I have enjoyed his hustle and contribution and agree that he will be missed ... always thought a mÿ

[> my thoughts... Long winded but sincere -- JCard, 19:49:12 02/17/04 Tue

It's great to have another obviously thoughtful and knowledgeable poster on the board. It's also grat as MFP noted that some folk actually care about the program. Here's my 2 cents, which are mostly rehashes:
I've not given up on KB, but I don't think he should start as a one. Too many turnovers. too inconsistent. All Conerence one day, invisible or a negative the next. I think he might be an effective 6th man, hence my call for a juco point previously. I wonder if gobroncs is on to something when he questions his health. I'm not sure that I agree with gobroncs that Bakari would have been a tremendous upgrade; he certainly was quicker, but I wasn't that impressed with his decisions on the court (although they did improve as he got more PT). I guess we'll know next season when he plays, and possibly starts at CSUN.

I think Denison will get better. Little things: running the floor, hands, feet& reactions seem to be there. You are dead on right that he needs to be more assertive. I think he will be when he gets stronger; maybe I'm being too Pollyannish. I think back to the improvement in Graves and Lopez from their junior and senior years and hope we can see the same in Denison. I grant you both Lopez and Graves were much more developed physically than Denison tho'. You could also counter that Von Buchwaldt and Emslie (more Denison's bodytype) never did pan out.I think Denison already has shown more upside than those two.

Speaking of upside, I agree that Perkins has plenty. I think he'll be huge next season if he improves his ball handling and works on making his outside shot consistent. that we can even discuss the possility that Pierce is the most talented player in the program is a sad indictment of the talent level.

As for the other "bigs" I agree with everything you said. Howell's numbers weren't as good as last year, but he was a posterboy for the effort and tenacity that you'd like to associate with SCU b-ball. Defensively, he was seldom 'lit up" and was, until the arrival of Niessen, the only consitently physical Bronco. Legge ang Borchart do have to step up. A year ago, the team was promoting Legge as a potential all-conference player; we've seen only fleeting moments of that possibility. I still wonder how good Borchart would haave been or might be if he were healthy. He was pretty well regarded coming out of Chaminade. A friend of mine who ref's CIF thought he was a steal and projected him as a 3 in college. Maybe a healthy offseason will bring a different player to the court next year. Tibbets is confounding. He did make that sweeping jump hook in the Pepp game, but he also short armed a couple of chippies. Like Denison, he needs PT and the confidence that would hopefuly follow. Physically he looks like a different player from last year, which might bode well for Denison.

As for DD, I'd give him another year, although if we finish with 13 wins again, I'm not sure he'll get it. the last 2 years could be explained by a disproportionate number of injuris. This team, until now, has been relatively healthy. Levick doesn't strike me as sympathetic. Davey knows the game, graduates his players and recruits guys that are good and productive citizens. What he hasn't done since the middle of his tenure is recruit large number of talented players After the Nash years, we actually had a couple to 100 recruits (Jones and Price; D'oyen in one publication was rated a top 20 PG nationally; Fast was all State). While I think the last few classes have been better, there was a real drop for a few years. Maybe there is a differnce maker out there at some JC. I hope so; quality people like Davey deserve success. If he's asked to leave, I see a Stanford assistant in the SCU future, especailly given the Cardinal's success and Levick's ties to that program.
Since you obviously have some contact ith the team,do you have any recruitining insights?

I have actually spoken with Coach Sciulli and Coach Pierce about the scholarship they still have available. They both said that they will be looking to get another post, most likely from a JC. I haven't heard names, but they seem pretty set on going in this direction.

Also, the hiring of a Stanford assistant is a definite possibility in the unfortunate occurrance of DD getting fired. Levick brought over baseball coach Mark O'Brien and softball coach Marcy Crouch from the nearby school, as well as several athletic department employees.

Lastly, I don't know if any of you have heard this yet, but Stanford is supposedly going to use the Leavey Center as its home gym until January next season while Maples is being remodeled. It could be pretty exciting to have a top 5 team in the nation playing on campus for a while. Has anyone else heard anything regarding this development?

[> [> [> Re: the Tree @ Leavey -- Nov-Dec '04 -- Bronco66, 18:06:27 02/18/04 Wed

yes it is true ....

during the revamp ... redo ... re-whatever of Maples ... the Cardinal will do there pre-season at Leavey ...

and they will also be giving SCU a game as well ... and North Carolina St. will be stopping by in mid-November on their way to Maui ... so again next year we have an "ambitious" pre-conference schedule ... possibly the reigning nat'l champs and another top 10 team ... (and then Gonzaga in league ...)

ps/ from http://gostanford.ocsn.com/genrel/110503aaa.html

Where will the men's and women's basketball teams play their home games during the renovation?

Thanks to Santa Clara University, we will play these home games at the Leavey Center on Santa Clara campus ...

Which men's and women's basketball games will be at the Leavey Center?

All home games prior to December 27, 2004.

I am a basketball season ticket holder. Will I get tickets for Stanford's basketball games at the Leavey Center?
Yes, all season ticket holders get tickets for these games. All tickets, however, will be general admission. Seating will be on a first come, first served basis.
