Subject: Jon Black update??

any Ariz folks have any word on Mr. Black??
Jon Black
http://scout.theinsiders.com/a.z?s=75&p=8&cfg=null&c=1&yr=2004&nid=707849

A very good student, Black supposedly has a GPA of 3.8 and scored 1230 on the SAT.

he sounds like a Bronco type ... looking for a great education ... and some sound coaching ...

made the Ariz Republic's Class 4A All-Arizona Team as HM

seems to be under some of the radar ... hard to find current press on him ... quoted as interested in hearing from an Ore school ... and mentioned SCU stopped by and looked at him ...

Mr. Black seems like a solid young man; However, I'm not sure that Honorable Mention All Az means that much; Jordan Legge was Ist Team all State, by Az Hoops and Az Republic, out of high School. Not that Newspaper/website commendations are always accurate & reliable indicia of of future success on the next level. (Hopefully it is for Henke)On a related note, Ryan Holmes, who was at least heavily recruited as a PG by SCU was 2nd Team All State.

that Jordan's major problem in contributing (at least this past season)is a "serious" medical condition ... some sort of "compartmentalized ... whatever" in his legs ... that reduces the effective time he can play (incl. practice) ....

this does not make his talent (or past or perceived talent) go away ... but apparently he is not "healthy" enough to perform in the manner we all (I'm guessing himself included) would like ...

the biggest knock in his first year was not taking enough shots ... (would have led the conference with PCT if he kept up the rate ... as would Dennison this year)

so let's hope he is getting better (with rest???) and that any AZ paper ranking is not bogus because of a condition that may not have bothered him in high school ...

having Travis to carry on the intensity that Jim provided should help all our bigs ...

and LP being another year into being a FULL TIME coach and further finding his place should help as well ....

(good to be reading and posting again)

even in High School, he averaged only 13-14 points a game. He,showed potential his first year at SCU, baffled us his second year and had injury limitations this past one.He contributed a great deal to a very succesful high school program (Mesa, I think). I followed his senior year in the Az papers, (after he committed to SCU) and the first team All Az designation was not bogus--he worked hard and earned it. However, it was not and is not an indication of college success, anymore than the Heisman means that a college footballer will be a sucess in the NFL--(see Ty Detmer, Steve Owens, Gino Torreta etc..). I hope Legge realizes the all conference potential that DD projected for him after his freshman year. My point was(is)Newspapers recognize accomplishment, both indiviually and team-wise, and that, while they can give us glimmers of hope, they are only subjective measures of how a player did against his specific competition. Hey, for me it's just fun to discuss this (or anything for that matter) with you on the web.
Fear the Pony--Go Broncos.
PS I still they need another legitimate 5 type big and a point guard.

understand about JL and appreciate the contribution (both your's and his) ... hopfully his leggs will be ok for an exciting season in 04-05 ....

as for Brody I especially liked:

But he still managed to lead the Hornets in points per game with an average of 16.6. The senior also totaled more assists (145) and steals (93) than any other Hornet. Despite being a generous 6-foot, Angley was second in rebounds (157) and blocks (12).

"I don't remember missing that many games," said Angley. "But I saw stuff easier and when I got back I wanted to try it and improve on it."

The point guard, who is bound for Santa Clara University on a basketball scholarship, knows that he will have to step up his game, especially the physical aspect.

"Definitely going to be one of the smallest players," said Angley. "Just have to step up and improve my game."

knowing he has to step up his game ... but the blocks and the rebounds should mean a lot of hustle ... and the assists would be nice as well ...

BTW: I really appreciate this board and those who post ... and hope there are those who are lurking ...
