Rather than waste his time trying to land the elite, Davey looks for ``a player with a high level of competitive spirit. We're not going to recruit a superstar,'' he said, ``but maybe a guy who's been overlooked a little bit and can develop into a good player.''

oops --- It's Tough to Say --- should have been here -- Bronco66, 19:54:16 04/25/04 Sun
-- I hear you GoBroncs
Hard to find complete stats on Tristan or the Coffeyville Ravens ...
and like you say 6ppg in JC is not a lot ... must be some reason the coaches were willing to go to Kansas for a player
from what I can find it appears that Tristan was mostly??? a role??? player (non-starter with about 10-12 minutes of PT) he did have multiple double-digit scoring games (at least four) and led or shared scoring honor on at least a couple of occasions ... on a couple of occasions he scored the go-ahead baskets in come-from-behind wins ...
at 6-8 he was the tallest member of his team so I would imagine his "role" at SCU will be different than at Coffeyville ... which did place 5th in the National JC tourney ... so this was no slouch team he was playing on ... and behind slouch players
I am guessing that there is more here than 6ppg and 5 fouls it appears his numbers are about the same as Jim Howell's in about half the time (the only negative were the about 3 PF's per game in limited minutes) ... I would say that is something that was part of the role ... or the reason he didn't get as much PT ... in either case that might be part of what needs to be worked on ... but personally I would prefer to have a Travis back down a bit than try and "teach" someone to be more aggressive ... if he can produce say 12ppg & 8rbs in 20-25 min that would be very nice
(sorry for the duplication --- posted the reply in the wrong place)

Re: what Davey "looks for" -- JCard, 09:14:43 04/26/04 Mon
Perkins was a great pickup, who also averaged 25 ppg in JUCO. Parham is reminicent of Linden Tibbets: non -starter, very succesful HS school program, single digit ppg and rpg. After 2 seasons and three years at SCU, Linden (who appears to be the most athletic of the bronco bigs) seems to be coming around. We'll see if the promise he showed in the last few games is more than illusory. Parham only has 2 years and needs to contribute immediately. Granted, he was on a team that has 4-6 Div 1 players on it in one of the toughest JUCO regions in the country, but with Perkins and Bailey graduating next year,6 and 4 in JUCO does not get you excited. Immediate front court help on both sides of the court is key. Hopefully Henke,TP, Denison et al can provide it. The coaches are still out beating the bushes to find some more players. All in all the recruiting class isn't bad. Henke and Angley are potential starters; one more "impact" recruit and the class would have to be consisidered a success (at least on paper). The proof will be in the record.

Nice Analysis JCARD -- Bronco66, 21:58:15 04/26/04 Mon
I will admit I try and look for the bright side ... Doron was a great addition ... and not exactly what I had expected (or hoped) ... DD's analysis of him as I believe someone who scores but not a "shooter" is very apt ... I had hoped he was bringing that Zaga "rainbow" 3 type of shot that we haven't seen much of lately ... (a Kyle Bankhead if you will) .... but what he does bring is very good ... thank you very much ....
and while TP doesn't apparently have the Kikert/Nowitski(sp?) outside game that we will somewhat loose with JR's leaving it would be nice to have another BIG capable of double digit production ...
face it this year Travis I believe was #3 at around 9ppg
so as we all painfully are aware ... a couple more timely points in several games this year and were looking mighty pretty ....
so excited about 6&4 .... no way ... looking forward to two more bigs that can score (TP and Henke) and like to BANG ??? ... yah that's worth looking forward to ....
and YES the Gods of balanced league play ... some nice outside play would be very welcomed ... a few more dishes to our "scoring" inside guys ... and a few more PCT points on the outside shots ... from whoever ...
one more quality player ...

Yo '66 -- JCard, 22:36:17 04/27/04 Tue
... keep being the optomist. I appreciate you positive perspective. We have spring, summer and fall to discuss the up coming season, so the occasional difference of opinion is to be expected and welcome. Gives us (and hopefully some others) something to talk about.

Bronco66, 16:18:20 05/02/04 Sun
yes its a long time till HOOPS ... and the spring thaw is about over ... (been working a lot lately so the posting time has lagged)
yes I am "optimistic" and proud of it ... and I think we have the talent to win more than our share of games as long as the "traditional"??? Bronco over-achievers step up ...
it looks like Pepp has Once Again sewn up the Commissioner's Cup ... with their balanced athletic program and ability to "recruit" star individual sport (tennis, golf) candidates to the Malibu Campus ... tough to compete against that ... (but that's fodder for another thread)
(none the less) nice showing this "spring" from Woman's Tennis, Golf and Crew ... and a some "gutsy" performances from the men in Tennis as well ... (again more fodder)
and OB "the Nephew"'s teams continue to show flashes of breaking through ... perhaps the "crown jewel" of the new "take it to the next level" Broncos it still seems that a few more years will be necessary before the "Return to Omaha" ... but still a nice job and worth going out to the 'old' ballyard ... before it is replaced ... (nice outing against the Cardinal guys) ....
so speaking of more fodder ... how about a new set of threads ... let,s size up the 04-05 WCC competition ...
perhaps we start with the pussycats of Westchester???
(see elsewhere)
