May 13, 2004 - From the Director's Chair With Cheryl Levickedited: to include the graphics ... add the emphasis ... and correct some formatting errorsOver the past 10 months or so, we have been working with the Office of Communications and Marketing, as well as a number of other people on campus, to develop a new Bronco mascot logo. I'm pleased to report that we have completed the project and will soon be unveiling our new Bronco logo and a set of marks that accurately reflects the energy and direction of our department.
While I have wanted to see a great graphic on the Leavey floor as well as on the Official website and all other athletic related "branding" opportunities ... I seem torecall that "we" (the University "universal") had a Logo in the days of f***ball ... and it was a rearing, bucking, bronco that one would associate with "a native westerner, a chunk of living dynamite, not very big but game to the core. He can kick and Oh boy how he can buck. If you turn him loose in an open field his speed outstrips the wind."
if we get some woosey, new-age, trendy, stylize, quasi-horse we get robbed of our heritage ... I would hope we can get a logo that "accurately reflects" and honors the past, while celebrating the present, and anticipates the future of "our University" not just something that "accurately reflects the energy and direction of our department". (emphasis added)
I realize it is too late to influence the design process but I want to go on record "before" the "unveiling" ...
(why does it seem we are more in the coronation mode than the collaborative mode? .... and why does (or doesn't) that surprise those who wonder why more people don't get involved/attend Bronco events???)
the Ghost of Broncos Past ...

appreciate "hearing" that ... We all want the Broncos to continue succeeding ... and that means in life as well as on the field, court, water or wherever the competition occurs ... and in a manner that reflects proudly on both the institution under whose name they compete and upon those who paved the way
as for the few ... been working on that ...

TA-DA !! The "NEW" Bronco mascot logo -- Ima Horseshead, 20:55:41 06/07/04 Mon
rel=nofollow target=_blank href="http://santaclarabroncos.collegesports.com/genrel/060404aaa.html">Santa Clara University Athletics Unveils Branding Initiative
June 4, 2004
"We have a great deal of respect for the history and tradition of Santa Clara and we worked to retain that. However, the lack of a marketable mascot logo the past several years has inhibited our ability to extend the Santa Clara brand. Together, with the help of Collegiate Licening Company, we should be able to expand our apparel selection and place products bearing our logo into more retail outlets."

OK, as I look at the sneering equine visage,I am not moved;it looks a bit better on paper, tho'.My 12 year old thinks its cool, so maybe it will appeal to the Yout'.
Maybe it will look even better on this year's BBall T-shirt, but to quote Charles Barkley, "I doubt it". Let's hope the AD didn't break the bank paying for this. The block "SC" looks swell, however.

it seems (from reading the press release) that the real driving force was getting something that the merchandisers could get behind ... reading between the lines (the school I graduated from placed a big weight on critical thinking) it seems that the "Department"/school cut a deal with the "designers" (Phoenix Design Works) and the "merchandisers" (Collegiate Licensing Company) to"capture a traditional collegiate look while also appealing to the retail marketplace and a younger audience[emphasis added] ... the lack of a marketable mascot logo the past several years has inhibited our ability to extend the Santa Clara brand. Together, with the help of Collegiate Licening Company, we should be able to expand our apparel selection and place products bearing our logo into more retail outlets." said Richard Kilwien, associate athletic director at SCU ...my "educated" (I have observed and participated in "weasel-speak" for many years) guess ... is that PDW and CLC pretty much dictated ... hey this is what we think can sell and we're willing to put our money where our mouth is ... so we cut you a deal ... take one of these designs and well take our "normal" fee on the back-end off the top of any profit from sales of BRONCO merchandise ...
the logos were picked :
[because of their ability to]"provide the university with an opportunity to enhance revenues through licensing royalties."
and
"accurately reflect the energy and direction of the department as well as their marketing and merchandising potential"
"After that review, the department negotiated a funding strategy with PDW and CLC that did not place a strain on existing resources while creating a lasting revenue stream."
probably after someone said "hey look at what Gonzaga has done ... just think if you had a cut of all that merchandising ... and we could be the next Gonzaga ... " unfortunately I like the Bulldog better ... but that's just one opinion ....
I hope your 12 year old (and the folks at PDW ... and more importantly CLC) called it right ... in any case chalk one more up for Cheryl's team ... we got a new Bronco ... let's hope it kick's up a storm ... (I just don't see it kick'n yet ... but then there's still the "moving as opposed to stationary images" to come .... perhaps that will be the "chunk of living dynamite ... that can kick and oh boy how he can buck"
and the "students, alumni and friends of the program" (who don't seem to have been part of the process) will "well receive ... this new logo identity system (that) will be long-lasting and continue to foster pride in our programs."
