St. Louis interviewing SCU A.D.
By Jon Wilner
Mercury News
Santa Clara Athletic Director Cheryl Levick is the leading candidate to fill the vacant position at St. Louis University and will undergo a second round of interviews today.
``They approached me, and I have some interest,'' said Levick, who grew up in St. Louis and graduated from the University of Missouri. ``But I need to talk to them further.''

Santa Clara's AD tops list at SLU
By Stu Durando
Of the Post-Dispatch

she is the only candidate scheduled for a second visit and is considered the frontrunner.
"I think she is a very, very strong candidate,'' said Dr. Michael Ross, chairman of the search committee. "The committee was very impressed with her and thought it was a good fit between Cheryl Levick and St. Louis University. We felt good enough about it and confident that we wanted the rest of the university community to meet with her.''
She will meet with athletic department employees, coaches and student-athletes.
Ross said the search committee will make a recommendation to Biondi and Weixlmann, and they will make the final decision.
"I know how I'd like it to turn out,'' Ross said.

Interesting Post on WWW.Billikens.com -- Sheltiedave, 15:29:05 06/15/04 Tue
Ms. Levick is the barnburner we need. If we do get her, it would be an outstanding committment to the future of the athletic department. Being thirty years out of college puts her at 52 years old, so she is getting close to this being her retirement job. Santa Clara, home of the Banana Slugs, recently won the NCAA women's soccer championship. It would be great to see our distaff soccer team do the same!

WOW ... she's really an dynamo -- STL AlumniFan, 18:31:45 06/15/04 Tue
I like the part on her fundraising successes which is mostly implied by the new programs and renovations she has overseen --
One of the most dynamic and respected administrators in college athletics, Levick has overseen a time of significant growth at Santa Clara. In her first three years at the Mission Campus, Levick reorganized the department's administrative staff, spearheaded a major renovation of its basketball arena, opened a new administrative office suite, received a $42.75 million commitment from the University's capital campaign and developed a five-year strategic plan.
During that time, the department has also added nine new athletic scholarships, sold out and managed the 2002 NCAA Men’s Basketball West Regional, won the school's first-ever NCAA title in a women's sport when the women's soccer team claimed the 2001 national championship and successfully completed an NCAA certification process.

Re: WOW ... she actually really SUCKED -- gobroncs, 13:13:15 06/19/04 Sat
Levick finished - in poor fashion - the rebuilding of our hoops arena which started before she got here. She was exceptionally unpopular with the alumni base, basketball attendance, despite an OK team, dropped in half. Women's soccer won a national title but had been the final four many times before (5 at least), men's soccer lost a national final, their fourth appearance in the final in which they earned one title, but again the other 3 happened before she got there. She did get a new baseball field planned and $ raised.
Overall, I didn't hate her nearly as much as most other alumni but she was far too controversial at a school that rightly or wrongly has a long history of community and not confrontation. I'm very glad she is gone, and suprised that she was not fired as I think she would have been eventually.
Lastly, Santa Clara's mascot is the Broncos not the Banana Slugs, that's UC Santa Cruz, a very different institution.

Levick is a Builder -- Stu Durando (St Louis Post-Dispatch), 09:41:43 06/16/04 Wed
Levick said there are similarities between the athletic departments at Santa Clara and SLU, starting with the budgets. Both schools are successful academically, with Santa Clara boasting the highest graduation rate in the West Coast Conference in each of Levick's four years.
At SLU, she would be called upon to quickly show her fund-raising prowess, which has been necessary at Santa Clara.
"There's a lot of fund raising that needs to be done, but the arena has to be top priority," she said. "The final design is not there yet, which is great, because I love designing facilities. I designed and built the arena at Santa Clara, and we're in the process of doing a new baseball stadium. Fund raising is something I enjoy doing. I do know that Father (Lawrence) Biondi and I are very committed to building that arena."

SLU's hiring of AD placed on hold -- Stu Durando (St Louis Post-Dispatch), 12:37:00 06/16/04 Wed
11:30 a.m. Wednesday update:
The official announcement of Cheryl Levick's hiring as athletics director at St. Louis University has been placed on hold because of an illness in her family.
Levick was scheduled for a second day of interviews and meetings at SLU today but those plans were cancelled, according to university officials. Also, cancelled was a press conference to announce her hiring.
Dr. Michael Ross, chairman of the search committee, declined comment on whether Levick had been hired. He did say that the search process would be placed on hold.
"It's really going to be up to Cheryl, and the focus is not on the search right now,'' Ross said. "The focus is on Cheryl and her family. Our thoughts and prayers are with her. It's really indefinite, depending on when Cheryl can attend back to this. There are much more important things for her.''
