Agree re the win being big especially after reading that pre-season preview on Fresno State.

As for the crowd, I'm dumbfounded to provide an explanation as to the massive drop in attendance in the last few years. 1300 to see the home opener against a name team?!? I know most students were home for Thanksgiving weekend but this is just bizarre. Looking ahead, it'll just get worse when we play Eastern Washington, Maryland-Baltimore, etc.

Everyone rips Levick AD but I find it hard to believe that a substantial # of fans don't show up because they don't like the AD. I don't like her either but frankly, if I were AD I'd be tempted to fire the coach because of the lack of interest in the program too especially with a newly remodeled arena (though they really made a mess of it ... it seems unbalanced and sophmoric for all the time and money they put into it). You'd think Davey, who is well known and well liked and a good coach, would be a drawing card.

Just listened to the SCU victory over Holy Names. Ist half was ugly; SCU sleep walked a 1 point lead at half. They played like guys who should have been embarrased in the 2nd half and won 90 to 62. Perkins had 18, Rohde 15, Rohe was 2-2 from 3 point range and had 12. Niesen scored 10, Howell 12 boards. Bailey scored only 5, had 6 assists and 5 TOs. As for D squared and the FSU game, I can't figure out the apathy that has pervaded SCU/Leavey except that 2 thirteen win seasons with numerous 2nd half collapses doesn't do much to generate excitement. As you note, Davey is well respected; he was a consistent winner before 01-02. He graduates his players and also has suffered an inordinate number of injuries since BJ went down. I think he has another year on his contract and I don't see SCU eating it unless things completely unravel. Attendance, friustration and apathy not withstanding, he deserves a this year and another to try to pull the program from what has been 2 years of doldrums. I don't think he'll survive another 13-15 year, though. Beating SJSU on way to 18 or so wins would certainly be a step in the right direction.

[> [> [> Davey Contract? -- gobroncs, 10:12:52 12/02/03 Tue

1 point over Holy Name at half clearly shows a lack of concentration, focus or something non-physical. That's a team we should dominate. One problem with us constantly running the flex and never fast breaking is that we don't get easy baskets. This is meaningless when we play Arizona, Kansas and (as rumored for next year) North Carolina, but with teams at our level and below it really hurts us, as maybe happened last night (I wasn't there).

As for Davey, I like him for the reasons you mentioned and hope he stays around but I'd like him 10x more if he took the handcuffs off his players and let them run and let loose a little bit. They'd develop better too.

When does Davey's contract expire, at the end of this season or next season?

I think Davey's contract was extended to 2003-2004; i looked for an article at the website to verify that but couldn't find one. As for the offense, it's been a source of exasperation for a long time. The Flex does make sense against teams who have a big edge in size and talent, but there are times that pushing the ball makes sense too. Last night, From DLEw's description, the Broncos forced it into Denison, Niesen et al. This in turn opened up the outside in the 2nd half, where Rohde and Rohe hit open shots. I'm not sure this will be that effective against teams with more size in the interior.
When you mention handcuffs, I'm forced to show my age on comment on the shckles placed on very talented Bronco teams by Carroll Williams. It was frustrating to see teams with Rambis, McNamara,Londale Theus, Carl Pierce etc playing slowdown against teams that did not have as much of a talent edge as Carroll thought. He improved as the 80's progressed, but the 70's were brutal at times. Did a great job as AD too.
