Subject: my SCU-GU game view
In reply to: JCard 's message, "2nd Place is up for grabs" on 10:53:54 02/01/04 Sun

the Broncos stayed with them the 1st half (even ahead as the score shows)

the three things that killed the Broncos (in my estimation)

1) unable to consistantly break the ZAG's press ... this press was new to me ... have watched them play on TV and in LA ... it's not an overly swarming press but can be annoying and the Broncos did not always (most of the time?) handle it well

2) you can NOT leave Kyle Bankhead open ... he makes the open 3 all day long ... its what he does ... he is their best 3pt shooter ... and got handed his lunch a couple of time by Doron (who ever is on Bankhead has to stay on him on Defense and loose him on offense ... then Few will take him out)

3) KB still has not found his shot ... and Brandon as well
let Ethan take the 3's and JR and occasionally Doron .. but kyle has(???) to get well some day ? if he does or the Broncs figure out how to use the 3 more sparingly ... and they don't make "silly" moves when pressured .... (a lot of ifs) then watch out the NEXT TIME the ZAGs and Broncos meet at Leavey (in the WCC Tourney Finals)

(and thanks for asking JCard)

I made the drive from the Central Valley, and I will admit, either there is great parity amongst college basketball or this team is pretty overrated. My reasons are quite simple, Kyle looked awful last night, clearly hurting us more than helping...and albeit the clutch 3's down the stretch, this game was close. I think SCU can beat this team in March, but Kyle Bailey needs to become more efficient. As far as letting JR or Doron shoot the 3's that Brandon and KB should not be, I really disagree with this. Doron is a 27% 3 pt shooter, Jr is a 28% while Breandon is somwhere in the mid 30's. We need to stop shooting so many three's and start forcin gth eball inside. However, at the same time we need our big men to be more efficient. I know both of you are either "related" to Neisen or close with him, and he plays incredibly hard, but he costs SCU a lot with crucial turnovers and offensive calls. With maturity I am sure he will turn this all around. As for the big guy...I think his name is Sean, he looked like a Frehsman last night. Oh well,we need to become a road savy team at this point. No let downs for the USD games...

Marlon, I don't disagree with your take on Neisen at all. He does play hard and I do like him (maybe 'cuz I'm a lefty too) but he is a runaway beer truck out there. He is tough and aggressive, but that needs to be channeled. As I previously remarked, my concern is whether he'll mature enough where he eliminates the TO's of unfettered aggression and bad decision making. I'm not sure he will. Hope I'm wrong. On balance, tho' I think he contributes more than he detracts. As for Denison, from the little I've seen of him and been told is he has good upside and works hard. He is a freshman and has'nt had to be fed to the wolves. Hopefully he'll see some more PT in the upcoming games because the wolves (and bulldogs) will be gnawing on him big time next year. What's yours and '66's take on his long term contribution?
BTW while I noted the same article on Armstrong ( that team must be loaded) I think the Broncos need big, athletic people more than another 6'4" wing guard. Then again so do most WCC type teams. Has anyone heard anything re: prospects?

[> [> [> Good Points ... some more analysis -- Bronco66, 18:03:44 02/02/04 Mon

HEY THANK FOR CHIMING IN!!!

and I agree with a lot of what you have written ...

No not related to Travis ... and only met his Mom and said "Hello" ... I think he has come the furtherst distance of any Bronco this year ... yes he is a Bull in a China shop and some of that I believe has spread to a team that desperatly needed to be energized ...

I have watched him this year since Maui and believe he is improving and will continue to do so ... the Broncos will need him in March and obviously next year ...

Dennison (the Freshman Canadian Center) is much too "nice" for D-1 right now ... he definitely need to "toughen-up" if he is going to make an impact ... he is smart and a good shot taker (I believe leads the WCC in FG% for "regular" players) but like Jordan Legge before him he needs to take more shots ... there was talk of Red Shirting him to give him a year to grow into the role ... and I agree DD has been careful about putting him in with the Wolves ... he has been getting more playing time and I think DD is bringing him on slowly ... also he has Lloyd Pierce coach him and the rest of the bigs ... so that should help the aggression and smarts ...

I made the comment about Doron and his 3's as he seems to be getting better (have to check the stats for more recent games vs. the entire season) Ethan seems currently to be the surest 3 shooter (he is either on or off) but Brandon and Ethan have about identical pct. marks and Brandon has been doing worse lately ...

JR seems to know when to take the shots and I again would bet his % has increased (OK SO I went ahead and did the analysis ... and ...

(for what it is worth)

I hope the Broncs build on their new found toughness and add back some finess ... USD home&home will be the next test if they can maintain intensity and follow the game plan ...

Gonzaga threw in a wrench with the pressing D ... that won't be a suprise the next two times ...
