Subject: What's Wrong With The Broncos

Another loss tonight. This time at home to Loyola. Ouch. What the heck is up? We were 10-4 in the preseason but are now 2-7 in conference. We went downhill once Altheimer came back which is weird because it seemed all we really were missing was a PG with Bailey and him hurt. But Alteimer isn't doing that bad.

What's up?!?

I think the collapse results from a confluence of factors:
1. The most obvious, Bailey's absense caught up with them.Losing your sole all conference player and returning double figure scorer has to hurt. Bak has not shown the consistent decision making ability to fill the point, and while Rohe has had some decent moments there you can't count on a freshamn recruited as a "2" to be the answer.

2. DD intentionally went with a softer non-conference schedule in order to help boot the confidence of this years team. This looked like a good idea when they were 10-4, but now appears like the team was unprepared for the rigors of a conference where are the teams are very well prepared for conference games. The WCC is more competitive top to bottom thans it's been in a long time. Between LMU, Portland and St. Mary's the Broncos coulld anticipate 4-6 wins in conference right there. Those days appear over.

3. Players who were expected to have immediate impact:Patrick, Kargbo and Borchart-- have not produced on a consistent basis. JR is maybe 80% of what he was in JC due to the devastating knee injury in the preseason. In retrospect, given how the conference season has gone, a medical redshirt may have been a good idea. Borchart, who I think will be a good offensive asset for the Broncos when he's healthy is like wise recovering from surgery to both feet and is not showing the abilities he has.

4. This is a very young team. the only seniors are the Andersons who came to the prgram as walk-ons.Freshmen and Sophomores --Rohe, Niessen and Borchart, Bak, Rohde and Legge are contributing major minutes. They don't appear to have handled the rigors of the conference schedule as well as I bet they will in the future. I think the frustrating losses to USF,LMU and PePP, took a lot out of them emotionally. Additonlly, Legge has not progressed to the point he was expected to. The Bronco Media guide describes him as a potential all confernce candidate;he might well be someday, but he has been very passive offensively, especially when his first few shots don't drop.

5. The team also lacks size and quickness, could use a "big" with a commanding defensive presence and another who could draw the other teams 4-5 out of the interior with some decent perimeter shooting, but then so do 80% of the mid majors in the U.S.. I suspect the Canadian kid, Denison will help in the future, but whether he'll help next seasom is another question.
All this having been said and being the homer/optimist that I am, I still have hope for next year. An experienced Rohe, Rohde, Niessen will be vastly improved next year. Couple that with a healthy Bailey , Patrick and Borchart and the steady and encouraging improvement of Howell and I think we'll see a much better product next year.

Thanks for the well-thought-out analysis. I find little to argue about. A few comments:

- I've seen nice flashes from Patrick but (probably because of injuries) he is not a major contributor as had been expected.

- I wasn't expecting much of Borchadt and I'm pleasantly impressed. It's clear he is going to be a very good player. Right now he is the back up to our most consistent player, Howell.

- Neison seems to have improved as the season progressed. He looked good starting against Pepperdine today.

- Rohe looks like a star in the making. How we do the next few years depends a lot on how he progresses.
