I also just bought a bronco, 1991 full size, with the same two switches and they worked for the first week, then I went hill climbing and found myself stuck in some sand. I figured out that the windshield wiper motor on the transfer case was sticking and had my wife continuosly push the 4x4 button as I tapped on this motor and it engaged, I then put the bronco in nuetral and pushed the low range button and it also engaged. I have not found a permanent fix for this but I will soon convert my bronco to manual lock out and advise you to do the same.
