Yes, plenty of people looked unhappy, more so than in recent years, but it looked like many people were genuinely excited to be there. I was there Saturday night and there was no "laughter or murmuring" in response to the speech, at least where I was sitting. The speech was hardly "desperate" and it's not a reach to say that many have found a good community in Irish dance.

I do agree that the mood was down from past years but not critically so. Still plenty of genuine smiles out there, kids happy and eager to dance, and schools enjoying themselves at results. I actually found the results ceremony to be far more pleasant than in past years. There was less ear-splitting screaming, very little drunkenness, and plenty of room in the ballroom to spread out. My biggest complaint was that it was too long and slow.

However, we are also with a school we love so I don't want to discredit your account. I'm sure that there were plenty of tears and unhappiness that got hidden from public view. I'm sure many kids were exhausted or disheartened by things. I just don't think it's fair to suggest that was the experience for the vast majority of families. We are in a tough time with Irish dancing, but there is still much to enjoy and cherish.
