Small local feises are no indicator of success at regionals or other majors since it’s the same few schools going against each other. Getting to opens is still an accomplishment as it shows proficiency in basics and the ability to stand out from other dancers with several years of training. However, nearly everyone at the Oireachtas has already reached that baseline level and you need more than basics to stand out. The choreography is one major component of this as is perfected execution of every piece of every dance. It doesn’t sound like your child’s teacher has the competence to develop good choreography or to develop dancers who can make an impression on the stage.
