Are any other dancers at your school placing well or is this an issue across the board? Do other dancers at your school have more complicated steps? Some teachers don’t give complicated steps to kids that can’t execute them properly.
I have seen kids with more complicated steps and spins place lower than kids with more simple steps executed cleanly and with strong technique. It doesn’t make sense to give a dancer a spin if their arms fly about or they fall out of the spin. (Not saying your dancer would, but just providing an example).
How much is your dancer practicing outside of class? How many workouts does your dancer do each week outside of class? Even 15 - 30 minutes of workouts a few days a week outside of class can increase power and stamina.
Prior to u12, natural talent will get kids far. But around u12/u13, athleticism becomes exponentially more important. Kids that either practice a bunch on their own or play other sports, start to excel more. Stamina and power are big factors that can set a dancer apart in a large group.
While sometimes it is the teacher and you may need to move on, sometimes it is equal responsibility of the dancer to do the work on their own to push them to the levels they want to achieve. How badly do they want it?
I would start with a conversation with your teacher and instead of blaming them and the choreography, ask WHY the choreography isn’t more challenging. You might get an interesting answer. Tell them your dancers’ goals and make a plan with them for how to achieve it. Ask them if they think those goals are achievable and in what timeframe. (Personally, everything is achievable if you want it bad enough. You might not get it right away or even this year or next, but if they want it bad enough / they can achieve it).
Good luck.
