Subject: It’s a mixed bag of beauty, cheating and toxic

We spent 10 years + in dance in 2 countries. In Germany we had a fantastic experience. Well run, organized, positive, professional school. Moved back to the US and not such a great experience. We had years that things were fun. Dancer worked from advanced beginner to Open. We were sort of ignored in the beginning as our TCRG was too focused on the champ dancers. In spite of it being given a limited direction or guidance, especially at a Feis, my dancers still managed to improve. Once we got to open, things changed. Dancer worked hard and did well but was in a crowded age group ( within our school)and was not the favored star- there were several more experienced/ favored dancers in our school.
We bought all the customs dresses, did the workshops, traveled mostly had fun. But lots of times you scratch your head watching kids that fall down/ fake fall place higher due to politics. It’s a fun ride in the lower groups and absolutely toxic in open. Not everyone- but our teacher pitted kids in the same school against each other and discouraged dancers from being friends/talking to other schools. Upon reflection maybe we should have switched schools. I watched the abuse and toxicity. I didn’t realize until later how deeply damaging it was to my dancer. As with most they battled through injuries and worked very hard and did well….till they didn’t. The vindictive TCRG purposely tanked my dancer at a major based on the dancers friendship with a dancer from another school. TCRG told judges not to recall the dancer to be spiteful. We knew the TCRG was toxic and a cheater and should have left. Those favors traded for the shiny stars in the school didn’t apply to my dancer because they were the same age group.

People complained about costs but we found it less than other sports. Classes and Feis fees aren’t much higher than other sports and it’s less than other forms of competitive dance. Solo dress is the big $$ ticket. We always did pretty well reselling dresses but the new custom ones have the worse depreciation! I do miss it- dance competitions were nice family time- but also emotional roller coasters- especially the majors. There are some really toxic- narcissistic TCRG’s out there . Buyer beware! Run don’t walk away from toxic school.
