1936 Love & Rain
Author: Qiong Yao
[Royal Crown] Magazine

In the Magazine [Royal Crown], I have posted many film pictures of [Love & Rain]. Thus, I have received many letters that expresses the audiences' concerns, supports, cares, hopes for this show. Even more audiences ask me about the date that the show will be broadcasted. I would like to express my thanks to all of you. I am sorry that all of you have to wait so long, but we are getting closer, day by day, to the planned broadcast day.

Also, some of the audiences hoped that I would post more behind-the-scene stories, others have asked me to make a documentary of the behind-the-scene stories of [Love & Rain]. I want to first tell you all that it is possible that there will be a documentary like this, because the Central TV Stations had another camera at the filming scene, thus this camera almost made a complete record of the entire filming of [Love & Rain]. For example, like the scene that Alec Su fell from the horse has been recorded completely. If this TV series is really liked by the audiences, then, maybe at that time, we will plan to broadcast a documentary.

In this serie, I organized some answers to the questions that I have received. In addition, I am providing some more film pictures to allow everyone to enjoy.

*YiPing at the Shanghai Dance Ball Room*

Ever since I wrote about Yi Ping(Berry's note: Zhao Wei's character's dancing custom in the [Royal Crown], there have been many readers who wrote to me to ask about that one particular expansive cloth and whether it has been published and its exact price. Allow me to keep this as a secrete. I will let you guess which cloth it is when [love & rain] is broadcasted. As of the price of her cloth, some journalists have already leaked out the information. Yes, they are right. It costed us 1.5 million Taiwanese dollars.

Some readers wanted to see more pictures of Zhao Wei on the dance stage. In order to satisfy your curiosity. In this serie, I published few more Yi Ping's film picture at Shanghai. Maybe, that extremely expansive cloth is in this serie!

At Shanghai's Dance Ball Room, YiPing does not only sing or erform. In [Love & Rain], much of the argument scenes, as well as touching scenes, takes place there.

*YiPing's Song, YiPing's tear, YiPing's black cloth*

Some of the Songs that YiPing sings on stage are fast and crisp while others are sad. Some of the song reflects her emotions while she is singing. I spend a lot of time for these songs. I wrote so much verses of songs that I even dreamed about myself writing it over and over again at night. Filming these singing and dancing scenes are also very difficult. It is necessary to write down all the verses to the song and then find a song writer to write the music. (Sometimes, we made more than 10 different melodies to a song before I find the appropriate one.) Afterwards, we invite a highly qualified singing teacher to sing in the recording room. Then, after the completion of the recording, we find a dance teacher to choreograph the dance movements according to the song. Later, we must find a group of dancers to practice these moves. Even after these dancers learn these songs, we still need to practice with Zhao Wei, so she can cooperate with them. After everyone knows their dance, then we can begin filming. During filming, because we were in a hurry, we could not NG many times just because Zhao Wei did not sing well. Thus, we brought in the CD to play at the scene. As we played the CD, we recorded the Scene. Zhao Wei only needed to match her mouth to the song. After the filming is complete, Zhao Wei enters the recording room, and make-up the songs that she matched her mouth with during the scene. After we recorded Zhao Wei's real voice, we inserted this back into the tape. Finally, we were able to complete these scenes.

Because it was hard to film dancing scenes, since everything must remain so orderly, there are only few TV series that dare to do this. In [Love & Rain], we don't even know exactly how long we worked on these songs, from first making them to the work after filming. As I am writing this report, our music teacher is still working in the recording room.

Despite our focuses in Yiping's singing, it is only one part of her performance. She often times has to sing as her emotion builds up and finally starts to cry. Her tears dropped down with the beat of the music.

Ever since I was little, I have always liked poems and songs. I was always touched by beautiful songs. As I wrote the script, I often time insert songs. I commonly say: "Life without music is not life!". Do you think you can live your life without songs? If there is no song, KTV does not exist. If there is no song, life is monotone and empty.

Yiping's cloth in the Shanghai Dance Ball Room are mostly red and white. There are some light blue and dark red. Most of the colors are eye-catching and joyful. However, besides these bright colored cloth, I and two other person decided to pick out a black custom for her. I call it-"Yi Ping's black cloth". This cloth comes with a black hair ornament that is made from black and greyish-silver beads that drops down lie a string of raindrops. This cloth was only wore by Yi Ping once, about three minuets on screen. In the scene with this black cloth, ShuShen(Leo Ku's character) has already split up with her. ShuShen left her and traveled faraway into the battlefield as a journalist. She is wearing this black cloth and singing the beat of her heart:

I am especially scared, I am especially scared, the drizzled raindrops

(I) can not see clearly, (I) can not see clearly, your shadow

I once, I once, cried toward the sky

The sky is crying, I am crying, where are you

One scene of memory after another, one sad feeling after another

the light of your eyes and your laughter, accompany the lonely me today

one shield of raindrop after another, one mountain and stream after another

your words and your tears, are the most pain in my heart.

I am especially sacred, I am especially scared, the drizzled raindrops

(do you) still remember, in the rain and the wind, (I) met you

(If I) knew earlier, (if I)knew earlier, (everything) is that quickly

why did (I) ever, why did (I) ever, meet with you.

Yi Ping sings this song on the stage. As she sang, tears dropped down. This scene is me than a thousand words and is more overwhelming than any dialogue. Many times, words are very powerless, yet songs exceed over these words. Her black cloth, with many fringes hanging from it, is like countless black raindrops, dropping with Yi Ping's tears. Scenes such as these are so touching. However, for the audiences, it is only a short 3 minute scene and passes like a flash and only a few would know all the works we put in.

Sometimes, I make scenes that are very boring. However, scenes like this needs careful planning and the equal understandings of the scene by the producers, directors, and the actors/actresses. IT is no wonder that I received long distant phone calls from the directors all day along and I have to talk the actors/actresses through every scene. After it is broadcasted, how many audiences would know all this work?

*Yi Ping & ShuShen"
One reader wrote to me. This is some of what he/she wrote: "I saw the cover of the December serie of [Royal Crown] and the pictures in there. Finally, I believe that Zhao Wei's transition to another image is successful. In these film pictures, I can no longer see the mischievous Little Swallow. Yet, I saw the sad Yi Ping with deep emotions. I also believe that Auntie(reffering to Qiong Yao)'s choice of picking Leo Kuo as ShuShen is correct....is it possible that you publish some more of their film pictures....when will we ever be able to see the film on TV..."

I have always believed that Zhao Wei is a good actress. She can take many different characters (and will be successful at them). She does not necessarily need "transitions to other type of characters". If the script is good, she does not need to change types of character. Zhao Wei's Little Swallow is her biggest success. She is in a hurry to change her style because medias pushed her. Many Mainland medias assures that she can only act Little Swallow, because her shows before Little Swallow ere not successful. One of the mainland media interviewed me and asked me: "We believe that Zhao Wei is a one skill actress!! Huan ZHu Ge Ge luckily was her type." In [Love & Rain], I picked Zhao Wei to act as Yi Ping, many people did not support me. Zhao Wei herself acted Yi Ping with nervousness. I remember when I went to Shanghai to examine the progress of the show, I once asked her if she has confidence in her performance? She said worrily: "It is like last time when I acted [Huan ZHu Ge Ge]. Even after I finished acting, I still don't have any confidence. Right Now, I have the same feeling!" After I heard this, I immediately went to the editing room to look at the already filmed tapes. I watched few scenes that Zhao Wei acted. She gave me surprises and impressed me in every scene. Her ability to change from Little Swallow to Yi Ping made me look at her in a whole new perspective. However, in few scenes, she did not perform very well. I immediately went back to the filming scene and talked with her for two hours. I told her my feelings about those scenes. After she heard em, she said: "What are we going to do now? Can we film these scenes again?" To film scenes again is very bothersome, not to mention that there are many actors/actresses involved in those scenes. However, we still re-filmed those scenes. Yi Ping, in the re-filmed scene, is completely different her previous acting. ZHao Wei is an extremely smart girl. Once you point it out to her, she can understand immediately.

Right now, [Love & Rain] is not yet broadcasted. Her success and failure can not be predicted. However, I assure you that Zhao Wei really did leave behind her image as Little Swallow. Instead, she brought the character-Yi Ping to life. Her love with ShuShen always had that atmosphere of sadness. Even at the most sweetest moments, there are pressures. ShuShen does not only has love scenes. He has scenes at the battlefield, at his job as a journalist, facing the Lu Family & XuXing, facing RuPing....all different type of scene. I remember that when I was in ShangHai, even Zhao wei told me with surprise: "This Leo Kuo is so good. When it comes to act love scenes, I will not loose to him!" Due to Audience request, I am publishing some of their film pictures in this serie. Unfortunately, because of the limited amount of pictures taken during the filming, many of good scenes do not have film pictures.
