First off, that really fast left and right running motion is called "dash dancing", and it's an incredibly irritating (and extremely effective) way of both confusing your opponent, making it harder for them to hit you, and easier for you to retaliate. It's actually really easy to do-all you have to do is start running, then turn around by hitting the opposite direction before you reach full speed, so that you do not slide to a stop, and, voila! You are dash dancing. What it does is it somewhat blurs your position, and it allows you very quickly run to dodge an incoming attack. When someone is jittering around in a dash dance, its really tough to get a clean smack on them, since you never know exactly where they are, and they can pretty easily smack you back if you miss.
Wavedashing is something I didn't quite get at first either- Andy first showed it to me at a tournament almost a year ago. Being the stubborn and persistant kinda person I am, I messed around with it for some time and pretty much got it down. All you have to do is sit down for an hour and force yourself to do it a whole lot. It has alot of uses, actually, but like Andy says, only if you're good at it. It allows you to grab the edge faster, slide backwards to avoid a running attack (and retaliate much faster than a roll), move in on your opponent while smash attacking at the same time, slide any which way after landing out of the air, and probably more (watch a video of me playing Mario, and you'll see some of the ways it can be good). As for why the hell it's called "wavedashing" beats me- that's one of the least descriptive names someone could have come up with to refer to it as. Go figure.
I'm not much of an HRCer, so I know nothing about painful hands and the such. Basically though, wavedashing, dash dancing, L-canceling, etc, are all moves that you may as well master if you want to get really good. It's simply loading your hand with more cards, so to say.
Oh, and yeah, we get majorly pissed at each other when an upset happens. One time, my friend Rich beat me, and I was SO angry, that I slapped him right in the face, and PEED on him!!!
Ok I lied...it's just a game. Hope I was helpful.
