Subject: England team for 1st test

Trescothick
Strauss
Shah
Bell
Pietersen
Collingwood
Flintoff
Jones
Plunkett
Hoggard
Lewis

More a side brought about by need rather than desire. I'd have picked the same top three anyway, Shah looked very composed in his one test in India and even with Vaughan fit I think he should bat four. Bell takes Vaughan's place, did well in Pakistan, badly in India. Loads of talent but needs a good series against a fairly weak Sri Lanka to put others under pressure. Pietersen and Colly are a good foil for each other in the middle and deserve their places on merit. I see no point in playing Blackwell in tests, his bowling ain't good enough by any means. Udal is a poor man Giles (and that is poor) and with pitches unlikely to do much for spinners and his dreadful batting and fielding, along with a promising though somewhat unproductive India tour Panesar is both to raw and unlikely to do much damage. As a result I'd go with four seamers and Bell and Colly bowling to defensive fields if an end needed held up or a partnership broken. Flintoff would have less pressure batting wise at seven (its hardly as if a spinner would take bowling pressure off him anyway). Hoggy is a certain pick, Plunkett has done well enough to deserve his chance and Lewis is both in good form and is experienced. Ideally Anderson, Harmy and Jones will be available later but with them all missing it is to much to ask of an Ali or Mahmood to step up far less a Broad or other youngster.
