Subject: England team for 1st test

The Sri Lanka series has highlighted a few points which England would do well to heed for the coming two, very difficult, test series.
1- As a leader and experienced batsman Vaughan is badly needed back in the team.
2- From Collingwood at five to Hoggard at nine every batsman is batting one place to high in the order.
3- Panesar is a better spinner than Giles, quite a feat given he has only played tests this year.
4- Geriant Jones is neither performing with the bat or keeping well enough to justify his 'all-rounder status'.
5- England seem to have treated the previous three series as little more than a break till the next ashes campaign.

Given that Simon Jones is likely to miss at least the first part of the Pakistan series England need to at least plan for the ashes without him as a back up plan. In my view their is no real similar seam replacement ready, hence a potential match winning spinner is required.

With all of the above in mind my team for the next test would be:
Trescothick
Strauss
Cook
Pietersen
Vaughan (c)
Collingwood
Flintoff
Read
Hoggard
Harmison
Panesar

I normally prefer five bowlers but by playing four allows Read to get in and Colly to keep his place. Reads superior keeping and Colly's superb fielding, and to a lesser extent bowling, make up for the loss of a bowler as they will chip in with dismissals that would not occur in their absense. Ideally I'd like to see Bell play sometime but Cook has done well and to be honest would have to fail for a bit to be dropped.
