Subject: 29th & Blackburn

Since we have pretty well dissected Beech St and its small grocery stores, how about starting on the old #3 Fire Station and the stores around it on 29th & Blackburn?
Here is a starter. Ashland Fire Dept was on Blackburn where 29th intersected. On one corner was a 2 story store building that at one time (way back) was Spot Bolners store where the best bar-b-ques I ever ate were served up.
Dick Wellman (54) live upstairs over the store, which later was a laundramat. Janet Stallard (54) lived next door to the Fire Station. Gene Blevins, among others, owned the Ashland Oil Station on the other corner. This station had a little raised sidewalk between the drive way entrances and that is where the boys stood to thumb down to the old High School on Lexington Ave. Then, folk would just stop and pick us up. No questions, no worries, ah what a time!! Mr & Mrs Whitt had a grocery store with a Barber Shop attached. Mr Whitt was a barber and when his son, Pokey (Garland Eugene) came up, he was the barber.
Across the street was a Std Oil Station next to the Fire Station where Deb Riffe, a Firefighter, and Miles Strother, worked for C&O ran the station. Outside grease rack, 2 pumps (only had regular and ethyl at that time)
Some one else fill in some more of the blanks.
WOW! this goes back a spell. Dick Wellman sent me a picture of him, Miles Strother and me standing in front of the filling station.
Come on...
