When you say loud noise - do you mean there was a loud noise and you turned off the engine or did it die (instantly or eventually) as when the noise appeared/ occurred?
-When the noise occured I throttled back and the engine stopped.

Was the noise a quick but random "slapping" sound or more of a banging/thumping sound and if so, did that bang or thump follow the rithm of the rpm's you were running at the time?

-The noise was a slapping sound equal to the RPM at the time. (which made the belt seam reasonable)

Is there a line, rope, ribbon, hose, whatever that can have gotten caught in the pully system and wrapped itself to stop the engine? Are all the pullies still in the right place, all bolts still on them?


-nothing noticable, and all of the pullies still appear to be in there normal places, but I will have to double check and get back to you.

Is there oil (more than usual) in the pan/ in the bilge - what color?

When you say you can't start it, do you mean it turns over but won't fire or you turn the key (yes, turns over but won't fire) and there is...

1) nothing... NO
2) a distant "click", but nothing else happens NO
3) a loud click and a buzz but nothing happens (maybe some smell of electrical burning)NO
4) the starter whirls loudely but it doesn't turn over te engine NO
5) the starter clicks, engages and turns over the engine, but it just cranks and cranks.. YES
6) Engine cranks and sputters but won't quite start up NO

If the engine turns ove but won't start, there is a chance the kill cable (which you didn't use to stop the engine) has been compromised.

On my engine right now, each time when I pull the kill, I have to manually push it back into the "run" position - under the expansion tank, next to the HP injector pump is a lever that (normally) returns to "run" when you push the kill cable back in - on mine the spring (I think) is shot and it won't do that anymore.

Also, on my engine, the kill cable runs over the top of the engine (from the cocpit panel) and bends around the top rear of the expansion tank (where the coolant fill is located) and runs from there to the kill mechanism.

In your case (a long shot here) if the kill cable came loose it may have been slapped around a while in the engine compartment and the engine may have been in the process of shutting off when you did so manually. Then, if you were to try and start it, it would just turn and turn without catching on.

Check the cable and fuel cutoff mechanism. Be careful - if you were to manually push the mechanism back to "run" position, and started the engine, you may not be able to kill it with the engine stop cable.

You would have to starve it from air by sticking a tennis ball or something else in the air intake.
