I've been musing this a few days as I tear out my cockpit decking. I think a good one would be to check the caulking anywhere you've got teak decking- I think limited to the cockpits on Mariners. Anyway, it's simple to check the integrity of the caulking- wet the surface down and let it dry. Spots that are not sealed will reveal themselves as they will not dry out like the others, so a small moist area will flag the places where the caulking is no good. This may reveal areas where the plywood beneath the teak has been subjected to repeated soakings. It may not be destroyed and only require a good drying followed by new caulking. However, it may be totally rotten there and to address it straight away is probably the best way to go, since it will only increase in seriousness over time (if it is rotten, to simply re-do the caulking is not good enough... the compromised wood should be replaced). Anyway, that's one that I didn't not do when I bought my boat and I'm paying the price now. In a few weeks and after a pretty solid effort, the structural integrity will be back, but I would rather be sailing.

Conner.....Where's your Mariner (40?). I'm just about finished with the purchase. Lot's of story surrounding getting the thing surveyed. Problems in transom and cocpit....plus, cabin, deck etc.....1969 model. Did YOU do the work.

How about the mast(s)?
