Subject: Mystery stainless disc, M32

My M32, Ryokosha, is undergoing a major makeover. We noticed what looks like a stainless steel disc about 2.5 inches in diameter on the external cabin roof, about 1.5 feet aft of the mast and 4 inches starboard of the centerline. It seems to be attached to nothing electrical or mechanical, and there are no apparent connections below. Any idea what it's function is? We're wondering whether to dig it out or not before painting. Thanks.

When we're finished, the only thing tired and dingy on the boat will be me.

My M-31 also has one and I suspect so does everyone else's, I think. I always wondered too. Hopefully someone of knowledge will speak up here.

[> [> I always thought it was the corner post of the head bulkhead -- Paul M31 #106 NJ, - Wednesday - 07/ 6/11 - 10:52am

It must be hiding some bolt driven down into the bulkhead from the top in order to give it maximum support.

I have a few other little circle plates like that, but on the inside, reinforcing block attachment points on top of the cabin outside.

I will be on the boat tomorrow and give it an extra close look.

I have a couple of those also. One supports the large fastener for the corner post for the bulkhead between the head and salon, the other supports the spindle post at the companionway. I tried to remove them when getting prepped for paint, but quickly saw that it wouldn't be possible to do so without bending it up so that it wouldn't sit flat anymore, so decided to not mess with them. There was no need to remove them, so they got painted over again. Unless you need to remove the bulkhead for a remodel inside, or the companionway spindle, or are preparing to replace the coach ply roof, I recommend not removing them.

Thanks for the responses. I shall let sleeping stainless lie.
