Subject: solid fuel stove installation, advice sought!

M36, Mariah, 1973 H#10. I bought an old Ratelco, Cole solid fuel stove, put it in the cabin into the alcove built for such; ran the stove pipe straight up through a hole I cut with a hole saw; placed the cap on and screwed it to the deck. Works great except the fiddle rail at the top of the box boiled varnish last time I used it. I don't think the box was fired too high. I read on the MarineStove web cite that 9" clearance was necessary. Anyone use there stove?? all advice welcome. Thanks, David (livaboard in Chattanooga, TN)

[> Ratelco Cole stove -- Kathy M32 Shadow, - Sunday - 10/25/09 - 6:02pm

Hi Dave, The Ratelco Stove model, 1655 was on Shadow when we bought the boat. I used it a few times only, cause like you said it got hot enough to blister the vanish. But, I like wood fires and I like cooking on wood stoves and I do cook all the time on my wood stove in my house in the fall and winter times, it's to hot the rest of the time where I live. It sure saves on the heating bill. I just found a great place to buy wood stoves for boats, trailers and mountain cabins - Navigator Stove Works LLC. Their site tells the proper space to have - so you don't burn your boat up. Which is like 3.5" from the walls. And there's a shield in between, also. My Ratelco stove has a back shield of only 1/2" from the bulkhead and 3/4" from the shield to the stove. On the sides the shield is not solid so what good is that? Going back to those neat wood stoves the Little Cod would fit on my M32, but of course I like the Halibut, which has an oven. To fit the larger stove will take some modifying. Should I or should I not? If I lived back in that cold country I'd sure have me a nice cozy wood stove to come home to. Yours truly, Kathy

[> [> Thanks Kathy. -- David Barrow, - Monday - 10/26/09 - 8:23pm

Im going to mount mine with spacers between both sides it mounts on thereby bringing it further from the fiddle rail. this will require a "bent" stack but it will give me more distance between the stack and the melting fiddle rail. Thanks.

[> Solid Fuel Heater -- Craig Parker M32 Ashlinka, - Thursday - 03/ 4/10 - 11:45pm

Hi David and Kathy, I also have the Ratelco bulkhead heater on Ashlinka. There seems to be no issues with blistering varnish but the bulkhead to which it's mounted is all tile.
Kathy, I almost bought the Halibut for my M32 but decided that the galley modification would be far to great for it to be feasible. The biggest problems being the chimney placement and cabinetry clearance. I have a vent almost directly above the stove but if I were to put a Charlie Noble in its place I would be certain to have dodger issues with the heat/smoke. My port settee is shorter than most I've seen with a sort-of end table at the forward end where the Ratelco is mounted. I am considering the Sardine for that area since the chimney will be already plumbed. By the way, Andrew, from Navigator, is incorporating a tempered glass side for the Little Cod and Sardine for those of us that enjoy not just the heat, but the warm glow from the fire. Also, Shipmate has resumed stove making it seems...an eBay search revealed that to me the other evening.
This probably wasn't much help but thought I'd add my 2 cents as I LOVE the ambiance of a crackling wood fire on a chilly damp evening.
Kindest regards,
Craig

[> [> wood stoves-chain plates-dingy chocks -- Kathy M32#3 Shadow, - Wednesday - 03/10/10 - 12:08am

Hey Parkers,
I was glad to get your two cents. I answered your post but my message got wiped out with those spamers. I did order the Halibut, and yes modification is under way as I speak. Since I had to remove the old icebox and the dryrotted wood underneath, now was the time for modification. I didn't like taking out the corner counter. but it's nice to have a removable board next to the port aide of the engine, so that's what's happening and so now my stove fits with good clearance.
I was curious how you have your chain plates backed? Also, are you carrying your dingy on the top of your cabin top? Yours truly, Kathy

[> Wood Stove -- Mike Anthony, - Wednesday - 03/10/10 - 7:20am

We also have a wood stove on Tivoli in the same location. We used it extensivly last winter and had no problems. We used charcoal most of the time. We also used Wood Pellets, however, they can make the stove itself too hot, never had any other heat realated problems...

We left CT in Oct. 30th and arrived in Jacksonville on April 1st. So we say plenty of Winter on the way down, including snow in Belhaven... However, it was a great trip and we really enjoyed, cold or no cold..

[> Hardwood Charcoal -- Kathy M32#3 Shadow, - Thursday - 03/11/10 - 1:13am

Hi Mike & Paula,
Did you get far enough South to winter on Tivoli? Though I heard Florida got a bit of snow, so much for global warming. I'm glad your Ratelco stove is doing it's job. On the NSW site, Andrew, mentions using hardwood charcoal in his wood stoves and I think you could use this with the Cole Stove with better success then wood pellets. I haven't found where to get hardwood charcoal, yet.
Yours truly, Kathy
