Subject: loose stanchions

A couple of rusty stanchion on our M31 have worked loose (a bit wobbly). Of course, the screw nuts are up in behind the teak/mahogany rails inside the cabin. Is there any easy way that I can get at them, either to cut, re-bed, and replace them; or simply to tighten them? I would, of course, prefer to replace them (they're a bit rusty after 40 years!)

Matt,

I think the "rails" you refer to are the mahogony stips that cover the inside of the hull in the living areas. No? In wooden boat builder jargon these are called "ceilings", I think.

If so, these can be removed fairly easily as they're only held in place with small brass brads to their frames. You can use the pry part of a hammer, but that might mar the ceilings on either side of the one you are removing. I've used a screw driver whose shaft is bent at 90 degrees to pry them off. You need to be gentle as the slat can split (the brass brads will be corroded and so over-snug).

But really, it's quite easy to get them off.

Best of luck w/the stansions.

RR
