Matt,

I think the "rails" you refer to are the mahogony stips that cover the inside of the hull in the living areas. No? In wooden boat builder jargon these are called "ceilings", I think.

If so, these can be removed fairly easily as they're only held in place with small brass brads to their frames. You can use the pry part of a hammer, but that might mar the ceilings on either side of the one you are removing. I've used a screw driver whose shaft is bent at 90 degrees to pry them off. You need to be gentle as the slat can split (the brass brads will be corroded and so over-snug).

But really, it's quite easy to get them off.
