Gday Rob,

You need a battery charger installed to charge your batteries. It depends on your wiring but it would be unusual to charge with battery switch off.

When running your engine, whichever position the switch is in will determine which battery receives charge. Theses days a VSR (voltage sensitive relay) is a handy add-on to divert power to whichever battery needs it more.

Make sure you DO NOT turn the battery switch to OFF while the engine is running. Can fry diodes in your alternator.

On Tivoli the battery switch is only on when the engine is running, it does not need to be on when either the battery charger or solar panels are working. It is in off position except under engine power, and yes never turn off when the engine is running.
