James she is a 40" Mariner and she is in North Carolina last I heard. A friend of mine looked at her many months ago and he said she needed a lot of work. From what he said the engine does not run and they don't know why. I highly advise you go see the boat in person and check it out for yourself. If the price is right it could be a good deal, just expect to have to put some work into it. A 40' Mariner in excellent shape are advertised for between 40,000.00 and 55,000.00 USD. Now deduct what it will cost to bring it into that shape and you can come up with a fair price. Wishing you all the best of luck and remember with a boat always add another thousand to what it will cost to fix.

Thanks for all responses,
I am actually already being 'charmed' by another Mariner 40', so to be honest, it is unlikely that I can help her out. I just think it's a shame that these beautiful boats, which -as I understand- were built with 'true' good-intent, are often overlooked by those who are dazzled by the latest 'bling'thing in the marina.
I'm off this weekend to see how I can help to resurrect one of Paoto Vahine's sisters. (don't tell the men in white coats, but I swear I heard her calling to me last night). lol.
I have a whole week to look her over, I shall do my best and I'm sure I'll be in touch for more advice.

Ha, you are "boatstruck" for sure. Can't remember the author, but there was a book out maybe as much as 10 years ago called WOODEN BOATS that described, along w/much else, the irrational yet very strong link between man (woman too) and boat.

The men in white coats would be overwhelmed if they carted off everyone of us...!

Now that I'm home, thought I'd share the first paragraph of WOODEN BOATS by Michael Ruhlman, a super book.

...I think this may apply to most of us on this board...

That sounds like me...
I would only neglect the cash bit. It's not that I have lot's of cash -by any means- but life has shown me, that when one's intentions are noble (as opposed to ego), the universe will always provide.
As much as anything, I'm looking for a 'home' for the next few years, along with as much 'adventure' as can be possibly squeezed in. I can see no reason not to cross the Atlantic, for example.
I've lived in and experienced, many countries. I am multilingual, technically adept and mentally fit. Now that I've passed 40, I can hear the sea calling me again (along with a certain lady Mariner) and it would be my sincere pleasure to restore one of Clair Oberly's creations to her former glory.
We shall see, but thank you so much for your input. It's a big step to make, let's hope all goes well.
