Subject: Repowering M40

I am thinking about repowering our M40. The 40 year-old Perkins 4-107 still runs like clockwork but the boat is definitely underpowered. We were barely doing 3 knots into a 20 knot breeze the other day with the engine running hot at 2000 rpm. On a calm day I can just about squeeze 6 knots out of it. I've been thinking about a Yanmar 4JH4E with a Max-Prop. It will fit into the existing engine compartment. Anyone have any experience with or opinions about this combo? Anyone interested the Perkins with a rebuilt transmission if I go with the Yanmar?
Thanks.

Peter,

I hope all is well with you and Snowgoose. With my fingers crossed I hope to drop a new Westerbeke 64A into Tivoli next week. I looked at a Yanmar but decided to go with the Westerbeke. It will give me 64 horses at a continuous RPM of 2600. I also purchased a new 18"x16" 3 bladed prop with a new 1.125" SS shaft. I realize I will sacrifice some speed with the 3 bladed prop but for the cruising that we plan to do I feel it is the correct prop. By the way Michigan Prop said the optimum prop for this engine and boat is a 20"x14" prop, however, I am turning a 1.125" shaft and would need a 1.25" shaft to turn that size prop.

We are hoping to launch and take around to CT 1st or 2nd week of September. Still a lot of work to do, but it will be much closer to home.

Hey Guys,
Good to hear from you. I'm glad you're finally looking at an end of your project. Let us know when you're in and we should definitely hook up. We may be in your neck of the woods (Stonington) some time in September.
Best regards,
Peter

We have secured a mooring in Deep River, it is about 5 miles up the CT River. I will pull the boat our there for the Winter and keep it at a slip there next summer. I would love to hook up with you once I am in the water, I will stay in touch.

Talk to you soon

Mike

Peter, we re-powered a few years ago with a 4JH3E and used the existing transmission from our 4-108. The re-power went quite well and we have been very pleased with the results. twice the power of the 4-108. You are probably only getting about 27 HP at the prop. we can do 7 knots and 6 in a choppy sea. Now have 1200 hours on the engine and it still chugs along. I have dad Yanmars for many years and am a marine tech by trade. It is the only engine I would consider for a sailboat but that is just my opinion. We advertised the Perkins in BoatUS magazine and could have sold a dozen of them if we had them. The phone rang for over a month after the engine was sold. Good luck.

Chuck,
Thanks for your thoughts. Did you consider the 75HP version of the Yanmar when you repowered? It seems to be roughly the same size and not too much heavier than the 4JH3E.
Thanks.
Peter

The 75 is just the 56 with a turbo. The turbo runs hot and we did not need to generate more heat in the engine compartment. In addition the turbo usually cuts the life of the engine by about half. The hull speed for Sea Trek is just a little over 7 knots so enough HP to push her over that is just wasted. The turbo also offers more chances for things to break down. We are firm believers that simpler is better.

Hey Chuck,
One more question. Did you change your prop when you repowered? We have a 16" fixed 3-blade prop. I've been thinking about going with a feathering prop (MaxiProp)although I've heard people both raving about them(especially about their power in reverse)and others saying that they're overkill and a waste of money.
Thanks, Peter

We are currently running a 17" and I believe it has a pitch of 8 or 9 to get the 3500 RPMs the engine must turn for Yanmar to warranty. Ours is 3 blade with the Mickey Mouse ears. We decided to save the money for cruising and not have another mechanical device to worry about repairing. Good luck
