Subject: Stepped the masts!!

We have owned Tivoli for almost two years, yesterday we stepped the masts, they had not been up in over 10 years. They look fantastic, (thanks Randall for your spreader project, I made four new spreaders and they look great). Tomorrow the boat will go into the water for a trip from Warwick RI to Deep River CT. That will be her home, it is much closer to our home, making it easier to work on. There is still a years worth of work but we are moving forward. I will send pics soon of all the projects we have completed, new cockpit, spreaders, engine, engine systems and on and on and on.....

Good for you, Mike and Paula! Looks like Tivoli will be in "like new" (or, perhaps, better than new) condition in no time. Fair winds and bon voyage.

Mike,
Did you use the original wire inside the roller furling? Did it fit on o.k.? I figured it probably would. Congrats!

Yes, the furler worked like a dream, thanks for that bit of information, otherwise I would have made a whole new head stay $$. The line from the Main to the Mizzen seems a little slack, however, I have not yet put the booms on, maybe that will pull enough to tighten it up.

Capt'n Mike, I thank you as well.

[> [> [> [> [> Triatic Stay -- Capt'n Mike, - Thursday - 10/ 5/06 - 8:56pm

Mike,
The triatic stay is the wire between the main mast and the mizzen mast. If this is what you are referring to, it can usually be tightened by adjustments to the several turnbuckles. Check each of the following turnbuckles to see if any of the studs either look like they are not far enough into the turnbuckle or too far into the turnbuckle:
1. Bobstay Turnbuckle and/or Headstay Turnbuckles - tightening will move the main masthead forward a little and, thus, tighten the triatic, but you will probably need to loosen the main backstay turnbuckles some;
2. Main Mast Backstay Turnbuckles - these can be loosened and it will move the main masthead forward, but you will need to take up the slack in the headstay and/or the bobstay (see # 1 above);
3. Triatic Turnbuckle - it is usually located at the mizzen side of the triatic but it is a total pain to adjust since you have to go to the top of the mizzen mast to it. If you attempt this tie yourself off real well at the mizzen masthead and tie your tools to yourself, otherwise you may hurt yourself or your crew below;
4. Forward and Aft mizzen lower shroud turnbuckles - these can be adjusted some (loosen forward and tighten aft) to move the mizzen masthead aft which will tighten the triatic. But make sure you don't overtighten or you could get the mast out of column.
5. Combination of 1 thru 4 - usually it is a combination of all of the above, but start by looking for turnbuckles that are barely able to be screwed into the studs or are all of the way screwed into the studs.
Hope this helps.
Capt'n Mike

Capt'n

Everything you say makes perfect sense, I will go around and make adjustments as needed. Again thanks for all of your input and help.

Island Mike
