Try this link: http://forums.torresen.com/sailing/viewtopic.php?t=2008&sid=1bd88c48c0f48d492e3ac7a8ddd90558

The Westerbeke 40 is the same as the 4-107. My hot water heater taps into my 4-108 using a tap pipe on the head just behind the thermostat but before the first fuel injector. I'll have to look next time I'm on the Gypsy Mariner to see where the other pipe is.

[> [> On the 4107 / 08 -- Randall, Murre, M31, - Sunday - 11/ 5/06 - 11:56pm

I have a 6 gallon ABI water heater on Murre. It came w/boat...so didn't do install myself. Just had a peak this weekend, and here's what I found.

There are two engine taps. One is like described above, on the top of the engine forward--just in front of the most forward fuel injection chamber, and just aft of the freshwater coolant tank. The other is a T in the coolant hose that runs the short distance between the heat exchanger and the oil cooler (starboard side of exchanger).

Hope that helps.

The water heater on Gitana Vela is connected same as on Murre. I can send photos if you like.

[> [> [> [> Water heater location -- Steve Cox M-32 Pyxis, - Thursday - 11/ 9/06 - 10:43am

Where are your hot water heaters located? Marcus which Seaward model did you buy? I'm looking at the space above the engine between the forward edge of the cockpit well and the aft interior bulkhead. The space is just about the right size for the heater but I'm not sure about plumbing for one above the level of the engine. Any other issures I should be thinking about?

[> [> [> [> [> Location on Murre -- Randall, Murre, M31, - Thursday - 11/ 9/06 - 5:01pm

Murre has two deep cycle batteries located in the engine compartment on the extreme starboard side of the boat just AFT of the aft cabin bulkhead. Just aft of this location is the water heater. Both sit atop built-in fiberglass boxes. The "center" of the water heater is roughly level with the top of the engine and, thus, the hot water tap just aft of the coolant tank. Obviously, it's significantly above the other tap, which is off the heat exchanger.

In the attached photo, you're looking forward and at the aft of the engine (and DO please note the crisp, new Chrysler blue--Bruce's recommendation). Look to the extreme right for the silver box, which is the water heater. If you're disoriented, it's cause the photo is missing both cockpit and fuel tank.

Again, the water heater came w/the boat. Has worked fine. But I don't know more than that!

[> [> [> [> [> [> Thanks Randall -- Steve Cox M-32 Pyxis, - Thursday - 11/ 9/06 - 5:39pm

Thanks for the pic. On Pyxis my batteries are in about the same location but are turned fore and aft and the aft one is angled in to the center which takes more space than in your install. I had already been looking at that and thinking that I could make it more effecient. Where I was alluding to as a possible install place is where I can see what appears to be a yellow bowl in your picture. The shelf it is sitting on is not on my boat and the whole space is open up there. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for the picture. Is there any chance for a close up of the in and out hose attachment points on your engine? I'd hate to hire someone to do the work, but when I look at my perkins I am lost. I also find the factory shop manual to be not much help.
TIA,
Marcus

Is this a question for me?

Currently planning to be on Murre this weekend...

Can take some snaps then.

Yes, I 'm really hoping to see pics of the hose attachment points for the in and out ot the water heater in your perkins 4-107. Thanks so much for your efforts, If you are ever in Portland drop me a line so I can show you the single mast Mariner.

...where else's it gonna go? :) Ya, the shelf you are seeing is accessible from the cabin. It's right behind the galley sink.

Putting the water heater over the engine would sure help clean up that starboard side, and get all those hoses out of the way, but I'd be concerned it leaves little room for crawling around the engine for maintenance.

There are some operations to the port side of the engine--not to mention the top--that require you to be super-longarm-stretchy-man. With the water heater over the engine, could you get to the port side coolant hoses that feed into the heat exchanger? Would you have room to lift an oil bottle over the engine oil fill? Could you remove a fuel injector?

The fresh water pump is mounted on the crank shaft, so it doesn't seem like raising the fresh water coolant the extra 12" elevation should be a problem as it certainly ain’t a problem for the tiny drinking water pump.

Curious to know how you solve it...

Hello all I bought a seaward f600(I think) this means the engene coolant connections are on the same side as the electricals and the fres water in and outs. F= fromt, you can get them is a few configurations. My boat is a custom cutter and it fits under the sink which is now on port side in a spot that would usually be part of the port birth. I will take some pics, I used a variable speed shureflo pump and a scanvic chrommixed leaving one bronxe hand pump for seawater intake if needed. the pump pulld the water through a big filter then into the heater and out the single lever mixer faucet. no expansion tank needed, and it dosn't cycle on and off when not in use. happy sleeps, oh, but clamp down w double clamps the hot out from the heater and its connection to the fawcet cause they are slippery when hot. Dont ask how I found out! cheers
