In reply to: Randy Steele 's message, "Thank you, J.I. Allison" on Mon August 22, 2022 23:09:42

I always liked Jerry Allison's sense of humor. In interviews, Buddy and Jerry were often making each other laugh.

I liked his choices when he got the opportunity to put out his "Ivan" record. He sings "Oh You Beautiful Doll" in a weird cartoon character voice and he gives "Wild Child" a funny treatment, too. A lesser artist would have taken himself too seriously and released a corny ballad or hyper-serious "Let's rock rock rock!!" raveup. Jerry was Jerry, he did things his own way.

Recently I was listening to Buddy & the Crickets with a friend who was mostly unfamiliar with the records. He observed that Buddy and Jerry didn't seem interested in performing a song straight. Buddy purposely did eccentric vocals with all the hiccups and glissandos. Jerry had fun with his vocals. And Buddy and Phil's background vocals on "Dontcha Know" are hilarious, where they "disagree" with the lead singer.

And I remember the photo of Buddy, Jerry & Bill, where Jerry and Buddy make it look like one long drumstick is going in one of Joe's ears and out the other.

Jerry was funny in "The Real Buddy Holly Story" too. Like Buddy, he was one of a kind.
